01. March 2006: Alison Garnett
Photographer: Alison Garnett City of Origin: Toronto, Canada Website: http://www.mylalaland.com]mylalaland Working as a full-time art director in the advertising industry, Alison devotes whatever spare time is left over in her busy life to her obsession with film photography. Alison first dabbled in photography at the Ontario College of Art while studying fine arts over 15 years ago. But her cameras were put aside until the arrival of her daughter just over two years ago. While on maternity leave she felt a need to express herself creatively in ways other than motherhood, and has been shooting prolifically ever since. Rather than make the switch to digital photography, she chose to focus on using and abusing an assortment of film cameras. Starting with a medium format Yashica Mat purchased at a yard sale two years ago, her collection now consists of a number of toy, Polaroid, twin lens and 35mm cameras. The latest addition is a Contax T3, which she states has a “lens to die for”. Considering herself an amateur photographer, Alison's focus has been on experimenting with film and processing techniques, however, her current interest lies more in the conceptual side of image making. A subject she claims she has yet to tackle. Strong influences are photographers; Loretta Lux, Stephen Shore and Gregory Crewdson.
