If you're interested in historical photography, Carleton Watkins was one of the first photographers in the western U.S.  His photography helped inspire a law to protect Yosemite, the first time the federal government set aside land for conservation and public use.  Oregon Public Broadcasting did a good story on him:

Living in the west I find this very interesting to see how much has changed since he made his photographs.  This location is now a park near where I'm working right now.  I'm planning to go there in the near future to shoot some film. I think there are still some old remnants of the shipyard that was there.
