New years resolutions
« on: December 31, 2016, 01:16:07 AM »
I was curious as to what film related (or non film if you prefer) resolutions everyone has made for 2017?  Maybe a personal project you wish to begin...or a new printing method...or to simply use more film.....

For me, I think the 52 rolls project is worthy.  Photos for personal projects, family, etc.  Experiment more...enjoy it more....worry less.

More objectives than resolutions:

1. Get into 5x5 (New Type55, 6x9 and 6x12 backs + single shot stock I have tucked away)
2. More pinhole
3. More medium format

Ah yes...pinhole.  4x5 paper negs, standard and pinhole are on my list

I just started doing contact prints so I think that means I'll be shooting more 4x5 in 2017.

The resolutions I'll fail to stick to are

~More with the 4x5
~get right into alternative processes
~slim down the hoarde of 35mm cameras that I don't use
~be a bit more creatively original

For me
- build my first camera (already did most of the design and got some materials)
- sell my DSLR (not using it any more since I have a small digital camera as well) and get some more analouge gear for the money

For me, and in two parts:

Realistically:
1. Reduce the camera fleet. Already started on this, digital went yesterday, 2 MF off Tuesday, Eos on the for sale board. Widelux will probably get a service and be off too. More to be reviewed in 6 months.
2. Don't buy niche cameras. See Widelux above!
3. Don't hoard exposed film. Develop sooner.
4. Join in the site more.

Hopefully:
1. Try lith. Yes I know I said that last year!
2. Enter competitions to give myself a personal challenge.

Definitely 1, 3 and 4 for me as well.  I think the 52 project will force some discipline in this or I'll be drowning in exposed film in no time.

Thanks everyone!

My top 3:

1. Take more pictures.

2. Take more pictures.

3. Take more pictures.

Not necessarily in that order.

More time outdoors, more political involvement, healthier eating and less talking about things on the Internet. Oh, and I'd like to get better at photography.

2016 was in many respects quite an ugly year, and my getting involved in photography again was in some respects a reaction to that. I want to make things that are beautiful.

I'm with you on #2 and #3, but not #1.  :D

1. Get out more and shoot more film
2. Shoot more COLOUR film as I only shot two rolls of it last year.
3. Use the Topcon Horseman VHR which has been sitting in a cupboard for the whole of 2016.
4. Get a better tripod (for reasons of 3).

2016 was ugly in my opinion as well.  I need to get back to basics doing what I enjoy.

It definitely was bad on many fronts. But the only way I found that brings a bit of positive is to look at the science news.
Gravitational waves were discovered, this made Einstein right again.
One more step has been a success in the search for nuclear fusion and unlimited electricity.
A new state of water has been discovered other than solid, liquid and gas.
The optical part of the James Webb space telescope has been completed.
And I can go on...

Been lurking on here for a while and loving what I see! My photography resolutions are to go back and reprint some of my older negs and to do a bit of lith printing, as well as get out more with a camera!

Happy new year everyone!

Get a job!
Finish editing and printing a small project (that had taken for ever)
Shoot more E6 4x5
Get my Jobo up and running

What order it happens in does not matter that much but jobo and job would make shooting and printing a bit more doable  ;D
Ohhh, and sell all the gear I`m not actively using.

I don't "do" New Year's resolutions, but I was looking over my income and expenses from 2016 in preparation for tax season, and noticed that I made $1200 from photo shoots. That included 3 shoots where I was still getting my feet wet and only charged half of what I do now. Also, my first paid photoshoot was only in August. So this year it would be nice to at least double that figure, which may give me enough $$$ to buy that d*****l camera I've wanted!  :o

Ohhh, and sell all the gear I`m not actively using.

I've just started to do this with some of my musical gear, and guess what?? People actually pay money for the stuff! Money that you can turn around and spend on film right away!!  ;D

1. Watch more telenovelas to improve my Spanish (on episode 39 of "Celia" at the moment)
2. Buy some Celia Cruz, La Lupe, La Sonora Mantacera, and other Cuban music (see 1.)
3. Hang out in Cuba, Colombia, and the DR (see 1. and 2.) and take pictures

I never stop being surprised by what "junk" others are willing to pay for. Old fishing nets, CD!! records, boots and cutlery have resulted in "free" tickets for a music festival in Barcelona, everyone´s happy  ;D

Wonderful, but that would give you a weird accent and add a bunch of "old fashioned" words :)

  • Send off my postcards for The Great Postcard Exchange 2016 before the next Great Postcard Exchange
  • Shoot more Ektar pushed two stops
  • Try out HP5+ in HC-110
  • Be happy with some shots on 2.25" x 3.25" sheet film
  • Get my new ice fishing tent successfully converted to a darkroom
  • Print the next Great Postcard Exchange in said darkroom
  • Compile at least two dozen shots I'm content with and exchange photo books with fotodudenz
  • Hoard fewer cameras

  • Shoot more Ektar pushed two stops <-- I want to see more of this. I shoot Gold at +2 stops, I'm wondering if Ektar +2 is just as amazing
  • Try out HP5+ in HC-110 <-- this is an excellent combination. My personal formula is HC110 dilH for 10min, but if you prefer dilB then that would probably be around 5min

You've not lived until you tried HP5+ in PQ Universal...
This is obviously a high speed push processing blocked shadows mega-grain solution, but it works. Just ask old news reporters and former punk photographers.

Not sure that I can legitimately call these "resolutions", more of a constantly rearranging mental list of wants, likes and aspirations, but in the spirit of the season, I'm happy to make them public and make a real effort towards at least some success with them... So here's the current top 5...

Take more pics (easy one to start with).
Lose my pinhole virginity (stop giggling at the back).
Try to think and shoot in "themes" (clumsy use of language, but you know what I mean).
Produce something tangible by the end of the year (maybe a properly printed portfolio).
Try a new format (fancy dipping my toes into the 4x5 pond).
Merveille de Bollwiller.
A hardy, vigorous and productive variety with large nuts!
