Spring has sprung, so it's time to get off our collectives asses and make this happen. Two things need to be determined: date and location. I have suggestions, but I'm open to others.

Location: Two immediate possibilities come to mind - Beacon and Peekskill. Both are on the Hudson Line, the former about 80 minutes from GCT, the latter about 60. Both are river towns, with a fair bit to photograph. Both are in the process of becoming post-industrial, with varying degrees of success; Beacon is a bit more Williamsburg, Peekskill is a bit more Hunts Point. Critically, both have ready access to beer. If it were up to me, I think Beacon is a bit more interesting, but I'm sure either would work fine.

Date: Looking forward from today, I can do next weekend (25-26 Apr), or 9 (Sat), or 16-17 May. If none of those work we can push further out.

Let's get planning, people. No doubt.

Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

25th & 26th April work for me, no doubt. I'd prefer the Sunday because I have a late gig on the 24th. The 9th of May is out, but so far the 16th & 17th are both open. Again I'd prefer the Sunday because I may get called for a gig on Saturday. Also because I'm a dirty heathen who laughs in the face of the Sabbath.

Ideally, I'd prefer the 16th or 17th, though I'm also able to join in on the 26th but not so much the 25th. I'm fine with Sundays, too, since I'm a recovering Catholic who laughs in the face of the Sabbath ;)

No doubt.

16th or 17th are good for me.  Beer.  No doubt.

I too am leaning toward the 17th of May.  I'll be in end-of-semester exam grading madness and in need of a sanity break by then.  (Beer = sanity.)

Looks like we're leaning heavily toward 17 May, so pencil it in. No doubt.

Any preferences or alternate suggestions for destination?

Penciled in, no doubt. I have no preference on location, anywhere upstate sounds great. Whichever has more urban decay?

Well, Peekskill probably has more decay, but it's not terribly photogenic decay. There is still some interesting architecture, but a lot of it was bulldozed and replaced in the 60s. Beacon's is older and generally more interesting, but it's further along in its revival.

But Peekskill still has some funky art deco architecture in the slowly-being-gentrified area.

Or maybe I just want to be able to stop in at the Bruised Apple and buy some vinyl ;)

So is it May 17th for sure? If so, can we add that to the thread title for easy reference (and so that others can quickly decide whether they want to join?)

Speaking of which, isn't there a member who goes by "Gotham Apple" or something? I don't mean to jump to any conclusions, but that name doesn't really sound like a West Coast name ;)

I suppose we don't have to decide on the location until much later, but either is acceptable to me. Oddly, given the fact that I'm a musician, record stores do not fascinate me, although I'd have no problem browsing one...

It seems we're settled on 17 May - I'm not sure if there's a way for me to change the title or if one of the admins has to do it.

I think you're thinking of Gotham Tomato. IIRC, she works at B&H; Leonore and I went down there for a Pinhole Day event a few years ago that she was involved with. I haven't seen her on here in a while, but she's welcome should she notice this thread.

Final destination (that sounds slightly ominous...) can be determined later, but unless there's vocal opposition, I suggest Beacon simply due to the range of options for photography and beer. Either way it's only a difference of ~20 minutes each way on the train. The store Leonore mentioned is actually primarily a used book store (and a nice one), but it has a record section and a listening station.

You're right Andrej, "Gothamtomato" is Deborah who's the event coordinator at B+H.  As I recall she was interested in last year's outing but had a work conflict.

Two weeks and counting! Time to start obsessing about what gear to bring!

Oh I've been doing that for weeks now! :D At first, I wanted to try to bring minimal gear (unlike last year), but of course I can't decide on just one or two cameras to bring :( I really hope I don't panic and go all-out like I did last year, it took me forever to develop all the film  ::)

I'm trying to limit myself to two. I've got it narrowed down, but I won't know until the day comes and I see what sort of mood I'm in. I'm aiming for peculiar over practical.

Well now THERE's a thought. Maybe I'll pull out my old Graflex Ciro for the ultimate in (my own personal collection's) peculiarity/non-practicality :D Then I can balance it out with the ever-practical Canonet.

This will all change within 5 minutes, naturally  ;D

I have no idea what I'm bringing yet. At the moment, I can't even be entirely sure of what my name is, so the camera selection will have to wait until the weekend.  ???

Rendezvous at GCT again?

Yup. At the info booth again. Name a time. Though, consider that I'll be getting back from my gig at like 4am the previous night, so anything earlier than noon may involve me either not sleeping, or bringing a sleeping bag to GCT at 5am to insure that I'm there on time :D

I could be there by ten.  I think it's about a two-hour jaunt upriver to Beacon.

FYI, GCT to Beacon trains leave hourly at XX:43, transit time about 1:30. If you want to get lunch first thing when you get to Beacon, the latest you'll want to be on is the 10:43. Expect a trainload of hipsters.

Somebody make sure a nice hot coffee is waiting for Satish! Or whatever his preferred form of caffeine is!  ;D

I remember people using some beer as a developer...
Then there's caffenol...
I wonder what would happen if mixing them both together.

I just realized that I leave for Europe the very next day, so I probably won't have time to process these until the beginning of June. At which point, of course, I'll have dozens of rolls from Europe to process as well ... :-[

In case anyone cares, I believe I've decided what to bring. Inspired by Andrej's "peculiar over practical" idea, I'll bring my Graflex Ciro, initially loaded with some redscaled Ektachrome Elite II which I'll shoot at sunny 3.5 (that is to say, "completely randomly"), and then my WPC, initially loaded with some 1976 Ektachrome X which is rated at 64ASA and which I'll shoot at no less than 50 because I don't think anyone wants to wait around for a 30-minute pinhole exposure :D

Haven't decided whether I'll bring a "practical" camera at all. Maybe one of my SX70s ... I've been having major exposure issues with both of them since they came back from the shop, so I'd literally be "wasting" film packs  :-\

I'm going to travel light this time.  My favorite Yashica 44 LM (I discovered by accident--i.e., actually looking at it--that the built-in meter still works!!!) and an assortment of films for it.  Thinking to do some street photography this time unless the Beacon authorities are down on such things.  In which case, flowers.  Or flowers and beer.  Or flowers and beer and trains.

Well, the Leica that I won thanks to the enthusiastic assistance of the community here is a given. To keep it weird, it will be wearing my recently hacked-together unholy marriage of Industar 50 and Nikon L35AF (I'm leaning toward "Nikondustar," but I haven't fully committed to that just yet), though I may bring another lens with me. Probably bring something in medium format as well, but that's still in the air.

"Indukon" sounds either like a Southeast Asian sea monster movie, or a subsidiary of Stark Enterprises.
