Kodak Tele-Instamatic Thoughts
« on: November 19, 2012, 10:22:07 PM »
Hey all,

A while back I won a Kodak Tele-Instamatic 608 camera from #BelieveInFilm. I wrote up some of my thoughts and it's up there on the site!

I love the little thing and the results--I didn't know what to expect, especially having never used 110 film before. I've got some of that Lomo 110 redscale on the way for next time.

110 is fun. I am a bit bipolar maybe, but on one hand I can be getting all crazy excited about how fine grained my 35 can look with 25 ISO film or loving 6x7, but then I love shooting my Pentax auto 110. In addition to how crazy the cameras are, and the auto 110 is one of my all time faves, I like how it forces you to work within the constraints.

(Note skate related pick as tintin started spreading the stoke a few posts back, haha)

Granted it's my first 110 experience, but it seems to be a whole different grain situation than with 35mm. I also tend towards the less grainy on 35mm format, but love the way my 110 shots came out, grain and all:

Your Auto 110 shots look fantastic! Love the depth of field on the 110 film look--significantly less grain than my Tele-Instamatic shots. Is that because the Auto 110 exposes better? The camera I was using is essentially a toy camera--couple that with 110 and it's grain-explosion (which I liked, actually).

Personally, I just LOVE grain. It gives plenty of texture to images, something that is lacking today.

McDuff: when you post an image from Flickr, just paste in the BBcode the site gives you when you click the share button. No need to do anything else.

The Auto 110 is not really going to be doing anything with the grain, but it has serious little lenses and exposes well.  Because the neg is small the DOF cannot get as tight  as 35 or MF but the Auto 110 had fairly fast (2.8) lenses and the telephoto helped with getting tight DOF.

I processed the 110 myself and after a few rolls I think I got the grain under control. I am no darkroom god but i think i figured out the times for orca in hc -110 which lomo were no help on. I did not post the first rolls to Flickr but they were pretty gnar. It had more grain than I wanted and the negs were too thick.

While I have some tiger colour film to shoot, I did enjoy the expired colour I bought from FIlm Photography Project.    This was shot with a kodak instamatic 60 - which has a sharp  lens and it a serious camera (it is a rangefinder instamatic!!). Francois I hope this posts correctly this time!

Tani.P I was looking at my images in iphoto and saw a pic from my first roll of Orca which I processed at lomo's recommended time for hc-110 even tho it seemed wrong (I usually try to follow the rules at least once haha). The negs were way too thick and the grain was blocky. Again, I am shooting 110 so I cannot hate grain, but I do not usually try to amplify it. Anyhow  the developer at the suggested tume was just trashing the negs.

Here is a sample pic from my first roll where i hated the development. I really do not like putting images on Flickr I do not like, I should some other account for these I guess ;)
