Filmwasters book: call for entries
« on: May 11, 2011, 02:35:33 PM »
Hi all,

we've got to a point where I think we can ask for submissions. There is no particular theme or category of camera/film/approach, just the usual rule of pictures from film/ other analogue photography process.

Please send a max of 5 low-res (72 dpi) images to filmwastersbook [at] gmail [dot] com with titles for each. Alternatively, please send a url where we can view the pictures you are submitting. We will eventually ask for higher resolution copies if your picture/s is/are chosen.

Submissions from forum members only please, the only requirement being that your membership started on 10 May 2011 or earlier.

***  DEADLINE for submission = August 7th 2011  ***

thanks all

Cool, can't wait to see it.

Any word on how this will be printed? Size, pages, etc... Printed via blurb or similar, and then available to purchase?

Just curious...

OK I sent two images for consideration. A filmwasters book sounds like too much fun, I'm sure it will have great images.

I hope 2010 images are OK, if not I'll have to take a good look at my 2011 stuff and see what I can come up with.

I would like to be considered for inclusion in the book. Would my pinhole images on the guest gallery do for a start?

So how are people getting on with submissions?

I have some ready to go - Just torn between a couple,  Im trying to work out if I should theme my own submissions or just go random, then if i go random all 5 have to be random, rather than 2 or 3 being linked..... Im off to lie down in a dark room, its already getting too much for me.

damion: I've got some new stuff processed and I've been looking back at old stuff to, trying to rescan but realising that I'm not getting the most out of my epson. I'm just about to crack down and join some epson scanning group on flickr, I just can't quite get the film in focus. -I've been thinking about getting some kind of miniature ladder and put on the scanner to measure up where the focus is..

I went with a series of images instead of random, but I also like how a group of random pictures feels cohesive because they are all random. Im so looking forward to seeing what you chose to submit!  ;D

Are you scanning B&W? If so, there's a trick.

both. you mean the scanning in colour and taking the sharpest colour layer trick? thanks for the reminder. I forget if it worked for me or not :)

The process is quite simple and surprisingly efficient. Thing is the scanners don't exactly focus all three RGB colors on the same plane. So, here's a short recipe:

Scan all B&W negatives as slide, 48 bit color, NO Digital ICE!
Once the image is in Photoshop, zoom in to actual pixels.
Select the Channels toolbox.
You now have all three colors in front of you. Turn each one on, one at a time.
You should notice the image will go from tack sharp to blurry. Just dump the blurry ones in the thrash can.
Once you have the only layer you like, go to mode-grayscale. This will make the image a 16 bit grayscale image you can then turn back on as an RGB and apply fake toning.

There you have it Damion :)

Does everyone feel like they've never taken a decent picture in their life when they're asked if they'd like to contribute to a project etc.
Or is it just me?

Well, I went through the piles of photos I have taking snapshots of each picture with its proper ID number so I can track the negatives...
At first I thought it would be super easy... but now I have to sort through what I identified as most worth publishing... all 145 of them... I think I have to narrow it down a bit...

Francois - you don't have an equivalent proceedure for colour do you? My Epson narrowly escaped going out of a first floor window on Saturday. My frustration was actually with Vuescan, but software doesn't land with much of a satisfying thud!

Sadly, I can't do much to replace the "thud" (well... I might have a vintage episode of Batman lying around ;) )

But for color, things are different since you can't just chuck a channel in the bin.

This is what I do most of the time:

I scan the image with Epson Scan through Photoshop (the only way to get 48 bit color with Epson Scan).
I use no sharpening, Digital ICE (Infrared Dust Removal) is on. I always choose some out of this world resolution... not because it's necessary but because I simply can :)

Once in 'shop, once I'm done with the dusting, fixing, shrinking... I do some LAB sharpening.
This is a process that sharpens without making ugly artifacts or looking too strange (unless you overdo it).

1. make a snapshot of the image (for safety)
2. convert the image to LAB color
3. select the Lightness channel
4. do an unsharp mask with the following settings
          Set amount to 100-150%
          Radius = Image DPI / 200
          Threshold = zero
Just eyeball it to your liking.

5. convert the image back to RGB 16 bits per channel.

I made an action set for it... it's very fast to apply.

Thanks Francois - I've decided I'm going to have a scanning trial session this weekend, running the same negatives through on different settings, so I'll give this a go. I have to get to the bottom of this 'scannning thing' it's driving me crazy!  :P :P

One day you feel like none of the pictures are worth it, the next you feel they're all great and shrinking the selection to only five is heart breaking...

For better or worst, I'm done! I decided against a long drawn out affair, largely because I hadn't given myself the time to do that. Choosing 5 from dozens would have been impossible so I didn't try - no short lists, no asking Mrs Kitten just a glass of gin, the other girl ;D hic!

Well... I minimally put the date in ISO format on my sleeves (yyyy-mm-dd). That saves a lot of the hassle... so does having contact prints (which I haven't done for the last few rolls...)
