Well, now that the collaboration is online, I can finally tell the whole story
Yes, it was a hare-brained idea. The theme had me totally baffled. At one point, in a stroke of genius, I thought it would be cool to shoot people going up an escalator. With a long exposure, I would get a blurred background and fairly static human shapes in the pictures. Escalators not being very popular in the region, I remembered that a large shopping mall in the next town had some. So I went there and found the perfect spot in a large department store. Gray walls, lights... perfect scene I thought. Since shooting on private property is not usually a great idea without an authorization, I tried to be as discrete as possible. I spotted a couple stepping on the stairs. I followed them with my camera. Like Wile E. Coyote, I had everything planned. 1 second exposure at f/32. Distance set to 1 meter on my 17mm lens. All I had to do was lay the camera on the handrail, aim and press the button. I already had timed it took about 3 seconds to be shuttled up to second floor. It was all planned perfectly... except for one thing. I hadn't noticed that at the point where both the up and down escalators cross, the store had installed some very discrete aluminum and glass barriers to prevent kids from jumping from one side to the other. So I hopped on the stairs, laid my camera down, quickly aim, press the shutter and WHAM! I ran head first into the barrier! Once at the top floor, I was rubbing my head only to notice I had blood running down my forehead. I clerk noticed it and called security. First thing I know I'm sitting on some lawn furniture talking to the store manager (who was really nice I must admit) with a husky security inspector wearing blue rubber gloves who was cleaning up the wound with some disinfectant pads.
This is also visible in the picture when you follow the light streaks: the short squiggle is my head stopping my entire body from moving on...
Now what I wouldn't do for you guys
