Discovered today while walking with some friends... Hisaji Hara. Using a Pentax 67, Hara-san has made reproductions of some of his favorite Balthus paintings. Exhibition this month at Gallery Bauhaus in Ochanomizu (excluding originals).

Very interesting. the photographs even have a vaguely early japanese photography qualuty to them, in that they look somewhat pencil drawn. japanese version of pictorialism, i guess. great stuff though, jealous i'm not shooting like this!

If you're in Tokyo, you should take the time to check out his new exhibition in a great shop / gallery in Ebisu. Here are the details:

He took the time to speak about himself, his work, and photography in general. A great guy too!

I particularly like the way he's altered the backgrounds to make them his own.

These a good images in themselves but the added context of the illustrations makes the set.

I also love the smoothness of the tones particularly in the last two.

interesting! I like his style, indeed with an old feel to it.

I'm thinking it'd be interesting to see another step of interpretation on this :)
