web albums?
« on: January 06, 2009, 10:32:43 AM »
can any of the web geeks recommend a free application for creating albums to use on my website?  I want one that I can adapt to match my web design as it is  (just a plain white background) with simplistic navigation tools and thumbnails on one side with the main image on the other - and not flash!  I've just found jalbum in java ... any other people can recommend?

Are "albums" the same as "galleries" ?

I am looking for one myself and the best one I've found so far is by Airtight, which has simple-viewer and a couple of others.  It integrates with Lightroom if anyone uses that.

Would be very interested to hear about others though before I implement my website.

the very same

I'll have a look at airtight

edit - it runs on flash sadly ... and the website from airtight interactive appears to no longer exist.

thanks

Jalbum is nice. I have used Web Album Generator http://www.ornj.net/webalbum/ with good success its standard html and css and can be customized beyond what it spits out for you. You might just want to go dynamic and see if you can run Satellite http://design.tedforbes.com/ which ties into your flickr account via the flickr api. But thats if you want to go nuts :-D Let us know what you end up using!

thanks for your responses everyone.  Sadly Simpleviewer is made by airtight interactive and is a flash application .... and as above ...  airtight's website is down so it's not available for now anyway.  I really want to avoid flash as it's not supported by some of the newer internet/media devices.

Looks like Jalbum is tops for now followed closely by Heathers link

One more idea....

http://www.klingebiel.com/tempest/hd/XibitMaker.htm

This one may have been mentioned. Example album using HTML (negative flash app.) or SimpleViewer....as seen on the page.

Not sure if these are any help...

ok this thread prompted me to get one of my projects uploaded.

I used Airtight Simpleviewer, it's very simple and neat and works like a dream from Lightroom.  Shame it wont work on the devices mentioned by Leon though.

If anyone is interested in what it looks like check out http://www.prestonbusstation.com

Also the Airtight website is now back if anyone wants to download it http://www.airtightinteractive.com/simpleviewer/

I don't like SimpleViewer from a normal web browser sense. It can load incredibly slowly and the one website I've seen use it.. well.. it didn't look like simple navigation. Give me plain text any day (which is why like Dave's Marginal Hacks album program so much that I mailed him ginger beer the last time I was in the US) it seems kind of simple to just upload your pictures and then type out a command line like
album -medium 50% -theme Minimalist
and then it'll make a page with thumbnails and medium sized images inbetween the thumbnails and full size images you've uploaded and it's just easy for me. *shrug*. Also loads fast on most browsers as far as I'm aware...
