For bulk rolls I use a small handheld Dymo Letra Tag machine to make paper labels to put on the cartridge so that they are visible through the film window on cameras that have one. On "proper" cameras with a silver metal body you can write directly on the bottom of the camera with a small permanent marker and wash it off afterwards with alcohol (save the whiskey). You could also keep a small notebook to record the content of your cameras, but that requires discipline (oh dear). Or you could live up to the name of Filmwaster and shoot the whole roll while you're at it!

I quite frequently forget what film I have in a camera. Usually it is either FP4 or HP5 these days. Normally I put sticky notes on the camera that fall off after a while and relocate to random places in my camera cupboard. Then I decide to either take a gamble or expose the remaining frames at 200 ASA.

I kicked this weekend thing off last week and then didn't have a chance to revisit and enjoy everyone else's work. Great stuff, team!! More live shots please, Satish! It's all about the energy  8) 8) I shot some 1600 colour at a gig two weeks ago, but only managed about 10 clicks-worth on the night and so had to get through the rest of the film without an ND filter at the smallest aperture and the fastest shutter speed. The sun was always out too - just when you don't need it!!!! - so that made it more challenging. DOH! Next time, I'll be sure to finish to roll in one go  ;D

Mine is a Harman Direct Positive from one of the new models of Camerdactyl's "pinholio" printed cameras.

Becky, you've used lots of words here that excite and interest me without me fully understanding them. This is what FW is all about  8) I will investigate.

Happy back holiday (Britishers + others who benefit from public holidays at Easter) and happy Sunday to North America and the rest of the world.

I'm down in Cornwall this week for the first time in a couple of years. I have my new Minolta SLR and a few rolls of old 400 Fujicolor something. It turns out that I don't have a single roll of b/w 35mm film left in my stash... that's a drama for another post though  :D

Anyway, last week I continued my "re-scanning the past" exercise and ended up going through a couple of rolls shot (probably) on my Bronica S2A with a home made lens (a loupe and lots of gaffer tape) in.....Cornwall, albeit around 13 years ago. I processed these myself at home and did a TERRIBLE job of cleaning and looking after them. So while I was excited by some of the photos, once I scanned them I was deflated by how much post work was required. Luckily the 2024 version of Photoshop - which I get to use courtesy of Amy's enrolment in university - has the Spot Healing tool (aka my new best friend) which I've used the heck out of to make these look presentable.

One of them had too much gunk across too large an area so I left it on...and I'm happy with a bit of 'flava' in most things anyway.

I have some more shotS from the trip to Ipswich's famous rotting boats.

Hi Irv, I have a course connection with Ipswich and spent many years there as a teenager and then a couple more towards the end of the 90s where I owned a house in Pin Mill  ;D I moved back to London in 2000, but still try to visit friends there every year. In fact in the first ten years of Filmwasters we had a couple of  members who were from that part of the world too. It's great to think that there's still a relationship between FW and that part of the world.

I bulk roll a lot of film and label them with masking tape, can and cassette.  I take the tape off the can and put it on the bottom of the camera.  Exposed rolls and sheet film holders get marked with an “X”.  I don't usually leave a camera sitting around for a long time with film with the exception of my View-Master camera.  I leave that one on a cabinet so I know it’s still loaded.  I also tape the door shut on that one, don’t trust the latch.

I have shot a few air rolls but it’s usually because the film didn’t catch properly on the take up spool and I didn’t check the rewind crank.  I’m pretty good about checking the rewind crank now.

I didn't know Ethan was still perfecting those.
I haven't had any news from him in years. What's he up to other than making stationery stuff with Joe?

I just avoid putting the ones that have film in them in the same place as the ones that are empty...

I used to do an origami trick to put the empty box around the neckstrap, but that's a bit complicated with bulk loaded film... Lets just say that the metal box doesn't fold too easily 😉

I must say that my dad was expert at stuff like that. We have a good air-roll of family pictures of Niagara Falls.
Funniest thing, he kept saying that Kodak must have improved their canisters as it's now so much smoother winding than the old rolls 🙄
