Minolta TC-1 in its "night portrait" mode, aka fill-flash, with Tri-X. When I first got the camera I took a pic of Satish just playing around in this mode and discovered, OK this has some possibilities. I go walking around Brooklyn at night and people don't notice or don't care I'm shooting flash (the first pic is someone I know so that doesn't count).

Wow! Wonderful mood, movements and lack of sharpness. Nice, very nice!
-
I must say I like them very much, being the second and the fourth my favourites. Why? I don't really know, because they are not sharp and they show some movement due to the slow speed, but the framing is very attractive indeed.
Nice shots.

Really like the look of these shots. My favourite is the one with the Richard Branson look alike.
-
I like the set. It's an interesting use of one of those "modes" I would probably have ignored.
-
Nice! Love all the movement.

Eminently cool.
-
What a great set. There is a real sense of being in the moment when you lloook at these-excellent stuff.
-
I really like these, the double exposures give them energy and keep them interesting.
-
Awesome pictures, I should shoot much more in the dark und in the rain. Very inspiring and again: great pics.
-
Thanks!

Nice edge to this series. Some of those look a bit risky--did you get chased and/or assaulted?

For the most part, people are surprisingly oblivious. It helps to have a tiny camera with a 28mm lens that people assume is not pointed at them on streets where flashes of light are par for the course. I only had one encounter where I was called out (didn't use the pic) but it ended fine.

My little essay around this series got picked up by Petapixel

and is in Medium/Vantage

Apparently I did not move Petapixel readers who were, in a sense, the target of the essay

Yep, these are really great. Thanks for posting the series here. I am a huge fan of the "night shot + flash" combo that you get on some point and shooters. It's great for adding movement and flava (TM) to night shots where you would otherwsie just have a static flas-heavy picture. I used to use it with my wife's old Canon Sureshot some years ago (examples from a 2003 anti-war march included below) and more recently with the Pentax Espio that I bought on Miller's recommendation (attached image at the end of the post....unfortunately, it's not a great photo, but you get the idea).

I also tried replicating the effect with an Agfa Isola on bulb in concert with the flash form a digi camera. The process worked just fine, but I never really got round to taking any strong images with it. Here's one of a friend in a restaurant that almost worked:

Nice sets!
That one guy with the blonde hair reminds me a bit of Sir Richard Branson...
