Title: Let's see some bikes!
Post by: jojonas~ on June 25, 2015, 11:50:31 AM
I've noticed that bikes seem to leave their image on the film for many of us. So why not collect some here? :)

I seem to like my bikes unmanned, and in the aftermath of unrest. How are yours?

Oh now you've gone and done it. Parked bikes are one of my favorite themes :) I have a Facebook album specifically for parked bikes, which is where I'm going to hotlink these pictures from, so let me know if you can't see them. This is almost too easy. I can't even begin to count the number of bike photos I've taken, let alone find them all. I'll just put up a few from last summer in Europe to make it easy on myself.

I remember that photo, Chad! Was it on Arista Premium or Arista Ultra?

edit: nevermind, I saw on Flickr that it's Arista Premium (Tri-X rebrand) and HC110H. I use the same combination and I have no idea why yours looks so contrasty and blown-out (in a very good way!). Do you do a lot of post-processing, or is that pretty much how it comes out of the tank?

Thanks, Satish. I don't do a lot of post-processing on most of my film scans, but I just fired up LR and it looks like I bumped the exposure +0.40, dropped the highlights -20, and bumped clarity +20. Here it is (http://www.imgur.com/X06oJJS) with LR adjustments reset to see how it came out of the Pakon.

Hmm, must be how the camera exposes it, how the lens captures it, or it's the magic of the photographer himself! :D At any rate, I really like the look  8)

Thanks! And the lenstagger info on that Flickr photo is wrong (looks like I accidentally exported it with Elan IIe/Portra 160 info). It was shot on my Nikon F5.  :)

Wales has a bicycle museum.  This one shot in 2006 on an Ikonta with Neopan 400 (RIP).

For a more recent proud cyclist and her bike, look no further than Cardiff a few weeks ago.  Ektar at 400.

Francois, that is the most inspired double exposure I have ever seen. Like a bicycle dream !

Here are three from a 1988 tour of Scotland, with an Olympus XA and Agfachrome slide film.

1. The track from the Altnaharrie Inn, across Loch Broom from Ullapool
2. Glencoe
3. The end of the tour on Rannoch Moor - had to cut short the tour after a mishap on the rocky track.

I am glad there are so many bike lovers here!

Bikes seem to wind up in a lot of my pics. Here are a few to keep this thread going...

Fredericton New Brunswick has a quite developed bike trail system for such a small city. It includes the old railway bridge that is converted into a bike/pedestrian bridge across the mighty St John River.

Some great shots in here. I like the pile of bikes Johan. I think one thing that attracts me to bikes as photo subjects is all the angles of the various tubes in the frames. So I like a bunch of bikes with all the crazy angles that get happening.

Thank you, mcduff! I think I agree with you, there is something with the angles in bycycles.. There is a lot of angles in this picture though, and especially I like the ones behind the chaos of bikes that run from side to side

Yes I like 1/30 for movement, but of course it depends on the focal length also. In this case I was standing and waiting for a bus, prefocused är @70mm and waited for the next bike, as simple as that :)

The second image is my own Ridgeback Panorama World Tour, resting on a trip round Kielder Water.

Quality touring bike, that Jackson.

I used to be a bike mechanic, and collector of old/exotic bikes. Until, that is, about 2009, when people started using fixed gear on the road in London, and prices rocketed! When I started, they were just old bikes.

Then, I was burgaled. Probably £20,000 worth of bicycles, some very rare. I was astonished to feel relief that I didn't have to worry about them anymore.

And this summer, I intend to fix and sell most of what is left.

Are there any other collectors in Filmwasterland? Or are you just photographers?

I'm glad that my collecting hasn't gone from cameras to bikes! one bike, one set of wheels instead of the one camera, one film dogma ;D

I'm not a collector, but perhaps a bit of an accumulator. I've got four at the moment, of which three are "classics": a Bianchi Strada given to me by a friend and extensively rebuilt (Shimano 600 - just built new wheels for it last week), a Giant 780(?) MTB rescued from the dump that was revived with a new geartrain and wheels, and a gaspipe Gitane with a Campy Gran Sport 1x5 setup (also getting new wheels once I get them finished). None of them are worth much as collectibles (aside from some of the parts), but I built them to be ridden by me, and for that purpose they are quite valuable indeed.

yeah you don't see things like that so much nowadays. maybe people get occupied enough with internet so they don't have to pull bikes ridiculous heights to spend the time ;)

These bikes recently started appearing all over town.  With an app on your smart phone you can locate one nearby, unlock it and ride it for about $1 for 30 minutes.  Then you can just leave it anywhere.  It does have a nice basket in the front to put your camera gear, I may have to give it a try sometime.  Leica IIIa using a Leitz Summar f/2 lens with Kodak Tri-X developed in Beerenol (Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer)

Interesting with those limebikes! there was someone trying doing that like a personal thing with old bikes but it died out after a few years. now those locking station bikes are in a few towns in sweden.

Been a while since I dumped off some bikes here it seems. here's a threesome :)

It probably would have worked better if they put wheels on the bikes  ;D

I have yet to see someone riding the bikes but it does look like some get moved around.  These bikes don't need to be locked at a station, you just scan a code with the app to un-lock it.  When you're done with it you lock it to end the rental.  The app shows where they are located around you.

It looks like the bike turned its "saddle head" towards the street. Maybe it's longing to hit the streets again? Very cool shot, Satish! :)

This thread has been quiet for a while.  Took a few shots of my wife’s 1960’s Schwinn Collegiate before I sold it.  Leica IIIf using a Summitar lens with a Nooky Hesum closeup attachment.  The film is Ilford Pan-F 50+ developed in Beer.

good revival!
and now something a bit lower on the fidelity curve ;) my magnifyer lens camera and just some grossly overexposed photopaper with a visible image as is (no development, like those solargraphy cans).
I actually held a workshop showing how one can build a simple camera and do photos like this.

Oddly, I don't think I have a single photo of my own bike. ;D Often, my first burner pics of the roll are of my front door, sometimes with my bike to the side of it (where it lives when I'm not riding it), but I don't think I've processed any of those photos :D Wait, there may have been one on a recent set of doubles, I'll have to check...

Edit: Nope, found the picture I was thinking of, and you can barely see one handlebar ;D Maybe I have a new photo project now? :D

Oh yeah, biking season is definitely over here too. There are still a few brave souls who go around with them but freezing temperatures are never fun on a bike.

When I was young and foolish (as opposed to now, when I'm old and foolish ;D ), I used to bike through the entire winter in Wisconsin, which has winters just as bad, if not worse, than Montreal. Old and foolish me wonders how the hell I did that ;D

I was out maybe a week ago, but that's probably it for a while. I'll do 50F, but below that it won't fly. I usually spend the winter rebuilding one or more of the bikes (I ride old stuff mostly cobbled together out of random free or cheap parts).

I biked to my gig on Saturday. I was not happy doing it, and was even less happy playing outdoors in 40-something degree weather, but there you have it. My bike will be in hibernation for a few months, barring an unseasonably warm day (with global warming, we'll have a bunch of those).
Title: Re: Let's see some bikes!

Well, at least you didn't have to play outside at 32F and have your lips frozen to that mouthpiece ;)

In Germany it's still unnaturally warm. You can skateboard and bike without any problems over here in the Harz Mountains. But it looks like it'll approach 0 °C at the weekend.

Isn't it strange how winter can look so nice but make us so miserable at the same time?

I can't count the number of bits of skin I've frozen when I was a kid. And few people know this but red heads tend to have skin that's both more sensitive to the cold and the heat... Frostbite even got me in the hospital emergency room once when I was a kid. Not fun.

Great shots, Tony, particularly the second one. I like the gritty look of Streepan. I think I really need to try it one day.

Thanks Christian.
Yes, Streetpan seems to bring what might be called "gritty realism", making it a decent choice for urban scenes...

Sometimes, the combination of sh*tty film (out of date, desert stored Gold 200) and sh*tty camera (Vivitar PN2011 point & shoot) comes out really well 😊

That's because it's mathematical.
-1 x -1 = +1
1 crappy camera x 1 crappy film = 1 good image
1 good camera x 1 crappy film = 1 bad image
1 bad camera x 1 good film = 1 bad image

See? it's totally logical  ;D

Yeah, these are 2 stroke kits from China.
This makes them quite reminiscent of the late 40's Whizzer bikes.
While they are stinky polluters, they do get very good MPGs
