Title: 2014 Postcard Exchange
Post by: Harvey on June 05, 2014, 07:30:57 PM
Okay, I hope I'm not treading on any toes here but I was getting a bit itchy for a Postcard or two so, with Ed's blessing, I'd like to propose the 2014 FW's Postcard Exchange  :)

Cribbing from Becky and Diane's previous posts, rules are as follows:

1)   Sign up by July 31 if you want to play.
PM me your name and address with country and e-mail.
I need your e-mail address to contact you since the forum only allows two private messages an hour.  If you don't send me your e-mail, it will take a LOT longer to get your list of names.

2)   Names will be sorted the following week.
Since we have Filmwasters from around the globe, I'll sort and divide the collected names into manageable groups (about 12 per group) to keep the cost of printing and postage at a manageable level. I will regularly update this topic with numbers of players.
Next I'll make a list of the sorted names and addresses and send them to everyone that signed up. Lists will be with you by August 8.

3)   Postcards should be sent out by September 1
Cards can be printed in the darkroom or with inkjet printers on any paper (6x4 or 5x7 inches)
The important thing is the negative used to make the print must be a film capture.

The subject matter is entirely up to you and it's not a competition either, so have fun with it!

You can send the same print to everyone on your list, or you can make different prints for each person, it's up to you.

Details about the image such as location, camera and film type written on the back with a short message are appreciated but not required.

Stamp, address and then sign the card so we know who it's from and drop it in the mail and then wait for amazing cards to arrive in your post box.

This is always a lot of fun, so don't miss out.

Once again the important dates to remember are:

July 31 = last day to sign up.
August 8 = names sorted into groups and sent to participants.
September 1 = deadline to send out cards.

Any questions just let me know.

So, what are you waiting for...!

Total signed up so far: 25

Last week to sign up.

Just to make sure I'm reading this correctly, each person will send 12 cards?

I have some old Polaroid post cards, I assume a Polaroid would be ok?

I just sent one of these Polaroid Post Cards to my wife while I was in Nevada, it took almost 3 weeks to get to our house in Bothell, Washington.  It should only take a few days so I'm not sure but it may have been lost in the post office for a while.

Count me in, I'll PM my information.

Yep.  I'm in.  PM with my details will be sent.
Title: Re: 2014 Postcard Exchange
Post by: Harvey on June 05, 2014, 08:37:45 PM
And we're off, PMs received, thanks Brian and Paul :)

12 is an estimate based on numbers who have participated previously but basically yes, everyone sends a card to everyone else on their list. I'll wait to be corrected but I think last year there were 3 lists to cover the 40 or so people that signed up altogether. You only get one list unless you want to send to all.

Polaroid would be absolutely fine, as are paper negs.

I also assume that non-silver contact prints are acceptable. This might be over-complicating things, but what if I scan a 35mm neg and enlarge it enough to make a contact print with it? That still counts right? I am asking because then the 'print' is being made with a digital negative and not an original film negative, but in my mind the image is still analog.

Count me in either way. :)

So long as I can shoot film, scan it and have it printed however I want, I'm still in.....

That's fine, it started life as a film-captured negative - it's filmwasted!

Hi Chad - welcome. The postcard exchange is a great way to see other work, and there is nothing like holding a print in your hand rather than looking on a screen is there!

....even if people like me send postcards printed by an online service from a scanned neg/print.
 ;) ;)

To the guys posing questions earlier, it's not important if the cards you send out aren't darkroom originals (or Polaroid original prints). As long as the originating image was shot on film/tin/glass etc. then the postcard itself can be printed however you like.

Shaun/Harvey: Thanks for doing this!

Since I'm "without darkroom" for the foreseeable future, does anyone have a recommendation on a place to have postcards printed? I'd like something in the classic postcard style, not a glossy 4x6 or 5x7. I can do a google search all day long, but digging through the results to find people with actual experience with said printer is proving to be rather painstaking.

Stamps are expensive but what the heck.
I'm in for one more round!

Since I'm "without darkroom" for the foreseeable future, does anyone have a recommendation on a place to have postcards printed?
I have mine printed on Fuji Crystal Archive Mat by a large printing chain and I spray mount them on cardstock myself.

Sorry, I didn't get a subscription to this thread so I missed the reply. I'm in Idaho, USA. I don't expect to get them printed locally and there are probably several online solutions, but if someone had experience with a printer, I'd like to hear about it.

I get my postcard pictures printed at the local drugstore from digi files. They offer pretty good quality for the price.
I know Staples has a postcard printing service but their card stock is super flimsy and the quality ain't that great. So far, nothing beats a good photo paper glued to an index card.

I've had intermittent great success with Walmart online. They have a postcard printing option with surprising quality and reasonable price. My favorite part is that their monochrome printing isn't tinged purple. The trick is that either they charge you an arm and a leg for shipping or you can pick it up at a local store, and the last time I tried to use them their in-store pickup option was broken for at least a month.

I plan to try to use them again, but if I can't pick up in-store I'm just going to buy some Ilford postcard stock and hopefully surprise myself:

Yes, well I didn't bother trying to find watercolor paper postcards to print on, so my options were
1. hand draw the postcard on each print (I have bad handwriting).
2. print postcard stuff on regular paper and glue it to the back (no fun in that at all).
3. design a postcard, make a negative, wax it, print it on the back of each card (that's more like it!)

The nice thing was that I didn't have to worry too much about exposure times since I just wanted 'full' exposure for the white parts. I was pleasantly surprised at how clear the printing came out.

With just over 4 weeks left to get your name down if you're still thinking about it don't wait too long. It's a great fun way of sharing our work and I have yet to find another way of getting original art on my doorstep for the price of a stamp  :)

Postcard exchange is a great thing, sadly, I think I am going to miss it this time - I am almost sure I won't have the time to do the printing for the whole lot. (Among other things I will be re-doing my darkroom to accomodate a new enlarging beast, hopefully putting in some fixed safelights, ventilation et cetera... And it would be kinda difficult to enlarge a postcard from a 13x18 negative :)) )

But I could maybe make a couple of contact-cards, so if anyone fancies a "one-to-one" approach, drop me a PM and we can exchange addresses.

I sent one to my wife a few months ago from Eureka, Nevada to my home near Seattle.  It took over 3 weeks to get there, usually mail takes 2 or 3 days to go that distance.  I attached the photo to one of the old Polaroid Postcarders.  The adhesive was dried up so I had to glue it on.  I think if you just send the photo without attaching it to some kind of card it will be more prone to damage.  like Francois said, they need to be well stuck to whatever card you are using.  I used regular paste for paper and when I inspected it at home it seemed to be coming apart on the edges a little.  I may use spray glue next time unless someone has a better suggestion.

3M spray glue's the best. Rubber cement might also be good. Drymount tissue should also work well... I know it does on lab prints.

I've never used Drymount tissue but the problem with contact cement or rubber cement is sometimes you see the texture through the print if it's not applied evenly enough.

Could also to be on the safe side post it in a transparent plastic envelope =)
Have some 3m spry mount but I think I would go with soft double sided tape, it´s really flexible and sticks like - ehhh - glue!  ;)

Well, I've chosen the photo I'm going to use. I usually have the cards printed commercially but, this time, I'm just having 6x4 prints done and dry mounting them onto standard blank postcard bases.

Oh, and for the first time for me on a postcard exchange, it's a colour photo!!  :o

All lists have now been sent out. You should have a list of 13 names, one of which will be your own so you know who you expect to receive cards from.

And I still don't have the slightest idea about what I'll put on them!

Same for me  :D
I think I have to get going this weekend.

Same here. I have a couple of rolls to scan and another two to three to develop and scan before I start to panic. If I have one I can settle on this weekend I'll be ecstatic. :)

Mine are all done and ready to post on Monday. I'm afraid that they are machine prints as I have no darkroom (although I am in the lengthy process of attending to that deficit). But they came out of the back of my old Blad & are on TMX, so I hope that makes up for the commercial processing. 12 shots - 12 postcards. Just made it on a single roll! Not that it was planned, I just thought, why not?

I had to order mine from a commercial service as well - cafepress.com - but they came out pretty well, and the image is definitely a film one.

Got my list and my cards. I'm out of the country on vacation for a week, so I'll be sending mine out as soon as I get back!

So glad to be part of the exchange this year. This is such a creative bunch of people with such a variety of styles, so it's exciting to see what everyone comes up with.

Hi Paul

What a cool idea to get the Fellowship panel printed as postcards. Not only does it make a lasting memento for you, but it will also widen non-FW folks' experience & appreciation of what pinhole can do. Often dismissed as a 'school demo' technique by non-Believers, your work shows the quality and artistic integrity which can be achieved with skill, patience and really sharp printing skills.

I know what you mean! I got home last night and found three cards from Adam, Paul, and Shaun. Started feeling inadequate  :o  I do like the image I chose but wish I could have done them myself. The cards themselves are a bit flimsier than I would have liked, and I will explore better ways of printing (if I can't do them myself) for next year.

But none of that stopped the excitement of dropping all of mine in the mail today! It's like Christmas - I get just as excited about giving the gifts as I do about getting them  ;D And I hope y'all like stamps, because I insisted on actual stamps instead of the machine, so you will have a collection of them on your cards!

I got 3 postcards already from David, Paul and Shaun.  :) I love the diversity of the work and each card is standing out in its own way.

What I find interesting about the recent comments is that after I outed myself as having no darkroom and would therefore be sending commercial prints, I noticed so many other FWs say that they have no darkroom either. Thank guys & gals - I now feel less darkroom-deprived. Reading other threads, especially the weekend ones, I thought that I was some sort of imposter on here  for dropping my 120 in the post rather than my morning coffee. Having said that, as soon as the darkroom is set up, I'm going to try paper in coffee. The prints I've seen on here look wonderful.

David, I haven't had a darkroom since leaving Stockport in 1988. And, yes I miss not having one.  Hell, come to think of it, I don't even develop my own negatives at the moment. My process is a real hybrid of film exposure and scanning - then processing the TIFF or JPEG in Lightroom4.  There are times when I seriously question whether there's enough "film" involvement in what I do to remain part of the FW fraternity.

I'm glad mine started reaching their destinations, I was worried that the post office lied to me about the postage required.  :D

I was going for the classic postcard look/feel and feel pretty good about it, but I'm thinking I should have used the Neopan version that I hadn't developed at the time I ordered.  Also, when I ordered, I didn't bother to check their dimensions for what they call oversized, so I apologize in advance for the size.

I was excited to check the mail today, which sadly I haven't felt in who knows how many years. I'm old enough to remember when letters were still common and there's still a little dusty part of my brain that thinks, "Maybe there will be a letter!" Alas, these days it's only bills and junk mail.

But not today!  ;D Two more cards, a great street shot from Peter and a lovely pinhole from Manuel! Woot!

That brings the total up to 8 so far. I'm starting to think of ways to display them all in a nice creative way.

so far 8 postcards have made it to my mailbox

Paul's pinhole
David's figurative work
Shaun's tulips
Manual's pinhole
Leonore instant negative recovery college
Chad's Boise depot
James's Cyanotype
Adam's Storefront Joker

Like said before it's so nice to see what other peoples interests in subjects to photograph is.
When Christmas arrives my mailbox overflows with Christmas cards whom get chucked out not even a week later but this is so different this is stuff you want to keep, so that's exactly what I'm gonna do. Normally postcards annoy me because they are so stereotypical, they try to force an emotion on you but this is so spontaneously and that is what I think makes it so beautiful, thank all of you for your hard work, I'm glad to have been a part of this postcard exchange.

Was told I received a number of cards. Only sent cards local to the states so far. Didnt have enough international postage, it seems. Printed digital on rubbish dyesub printer, no fancy cyanotype from me this year.

I perfer my Honda CN250 (Helix, Fusion, Spazio) maxi scoot! I bought it twice already (1986, 2004). I still have my old 60's Honda Dream CB450; 444cc! Yes four's are a bad number in Japan:)

Well, I've just had a look through the stack of cards I have on my desk and they are as stunning as they are diverse:

- Leonore's wonderful Fujiroid collage of a tree
- jharr's dreamy waxed-paper and tinted abstract
- Adam's lovely and colourful joker print
- Chad's fantastic dust-bowl period study of Boise
- Manuel's glorious and moody stone circle
- Shaun's stunning multiple exposure of Tulips in a glass vase
- (Dave's) Zapsnap's gorgeous figure study
- Paul Mitchell's just perfect pinhole study of Southwold

Thank you, one and all.

Paul's seaside card arrived. my wife said it reminded her of when her dad and aunts and uncles would set up the projector and show slides of vacations. It is a very nostalgic photo. Also Peter's wonderful "sad teddy" print got here today. Maybe not "sad", but just "waiting". I guess since everyone is getting different prints, no one will know what I'm talking about. Will there be a thread where everyone can put scans of the card(s) they sent so that everyone can enjoy the ones they didn't receive?

Now to address them all and get them sent by the September 1 deadline!

Thanks again Harvey for doing this, you rock dude, and thanks to everyone who has sent such amazing cards!
I always try to guess who the sender is without flipping it over and have been delightfully surprised so far!

Becky...addressing furiously. :-)

I'm glad the "retro seaside postcard" seems to have been well-received. I remember spending quite a while trying to think of something worthy to shoot and then it dawned on me that this was a postcard swap and that I don't live that far away from a pretty traditional / kitsch bit of the English seaside.

As I hadn't really tried out Ektar much previously, I gave that a go and tried to get the end result as near possible to the sort of cards that used to proliferate in sea-front gift shops when I was a youngster.

A really enjoyable one to shoot and I must admit I've loved all of the cards I've received.

I dunno, around here we're still getting tomatoes. They were kind of late this year. ;)

In the meantime, here's what I did with the postcards I got this year.
(I tried to get a picture of this with the Instax but it was either way too dark or too blown from the flash, and I didn't want to blow through an entire pack just to get this shot, so I had to settle for a d****** snap  :P )

(There's no glass - it's just an extra frame I had that I put up around the collage.)

Paul Mitchell and I exchanged a couple of prints between ourselves outside of anything "official" on the website, so that is one option.  If it's going to be something like a "club" run via the website, it's probably best to get it okayed from the mods first.

I hope, that mods will notice this idea and make comment on that. I don't know, what would be the possibilities for such an initiative. Maybe we should start a new thread about it to not to mess up topic here ?

based my participation past few exchanges, there is at least one exchange a year, sometimes the next one is a bit sooner like 7-8 months.
So, what about my proposal ?
Maybe we should create a "Print Swap Club" ? That would be cool.

What a couple of FW members get up to outside the confines of the FW website is no-one's concern but those members. A separate thread sounds like a good idea but, as with collaborations, postcard exchanges and anything else done with the Filmwasters tag attached, it seems sensible to just check with Leon, Ed, Damion, etc to see they're happy to go with it.

I have no more say in the matter than anyone else.  these are purely suggestions of what I think would be the courteous thing to do in the circumstances.
