Title: Time for a New Post Card Exchange, anyone want to play? [now with instructions]
Post by: Diane Peterson on March 22, 2013, 06:33:12 PM
I have to find the thread with all the info but we can start signing up or at least think about what you might want to shoot. Deadline for signing up should be June 1st, that gives everyone plenty of time. Post cards should be mailed out by July 1st.
No theme, only requirement really is that we use film (of course).
Send me your name and address if you want to play. If anyone has questions, please contact me or put them on this thread.

-------------------------------------
finally found the thread from last years postcard swap hosted by Becky ( thank you Becky, took me awhile to find this but I am going to use your instructions since they are perfect, of course!
Announcing a new postcard exchange, "The Summer Postcard Swap"

The rules are the same but if you're new here, this is how it goes:

1)   Sign up by June 1, if you want to play.
PM me your name and address with country and e-mail.
I need your e-mail address to contact you since the forum only allows two private messages an hour.  If you don't send me your e-mail, it will take a LOT longer to get your list of names.

2)   Names will be sorted on June 5
Since we have Filmwasters from around the globe, I'll sort and divide the collected names into manageable groups (about 12 per group) to keep the cost of printing and postage at a manageable level.
Next I'll make a list of the sorted names and addresses and send them to everyone that signed up by June 3.

3)   Postcards should be sent out by July 1
Cards can be printed in the darkroom or with inkjet printers on any paper (6x4 or 5x7 inches)
The important thing is the negative used to make the print must be a film capture.

The subject matter is entirely up to you and it's not a competition either, so have fun with it!

You can send the same print to everyone on your list, or you can make different prints for each person, it's up to you.

Details about the image such as location, camera and film type written on the back with a short message are appreciated but not required.

Stamp, address and then sign the card so we know who it's from and drop it in the mail and then wait for amazing cards to arrive in your post box.

This is always a lot of fun, so don't miss out.

Once again the important dates to remember are:

June1= last day to sign up.
June 5=names sorted into groups and sent to participants.
June 30= deadline to send out cards.

any questions just let me know.

Providing Polaroid postcards are allowed, I'm in. As I don't have darkroom access, it seems like the best bet.

If anyone wants to recommend a postcard printer (ideally UK/EU) btw that would be great. I had a lot of trouble last year with Moo, and in the end printed out photos and stuck them to card, which is okay but not very durable or convenient.

I have participated in at least three post card exchanges on another film forum.   For our current go round I have, 37 postcards to send, which is just a few more than the normal average.

I can say that receiving post cards from photographers around the world is definitely always great fun and very interesting. Not only do you get to see the world through photographs, you also get to see all the different techniques and processes that are available!

Its great entertainment, but it's also a great learning tool as well! We usually have a 'comments & critique' thread that follows the exhange and participants post their thoughts on each card the receive.

Thank you for your remarks Christopher..for me the more postcards the better..however the cost of sending cards across the pond gets to be a bit pricey so in the past we have split the exchange in two or maybe even three groups..That way if someone WANTS to send to everyone they can request all the address..I am hoping I can split (if necessary) into groups that have addresses on both sides of the water.. I think we are now at 20!

Hi Diane

I signed-up for this ages ago, but I've just checked back to see what the interest is. I see that you are going to batch people by location to keep the postage costs down. Feel free to allocate people in the middle of nowhere to my batch, as I'd love to get postcards for places around the world slightly more exotic than London & SE England.

Many thank for organising it - it looks as though we're going to get some interesting stuff.

David

HI David, not necessarily..I just wanted to give each person names in areas maybe in their country but also in other countries equally..does that make sense?..and it just depends on how many sign ups we get..like if "x" lives in the USA he will get names form the USA and across the pond...and is "Y" lives in England ( for instance) he will get names form England as well as the USA.. Just not one person getting all the USA names and the other person  getting all European, etc. names and addresses..hope this is clear...I also like sending to everyone but I don't know if some have restrictions on what they would like to spend on postage..and I totally agree with this..I just save up so I can have funds for postage to any and every where..
Thank you for writing ..

oh you guys are too organised! I will make a start printing this weekend, now one thing, I see some peeps want to have the stamp on the card, so if I put them in an envelope to protect the print am I breaking a written or unwritten rule of postcard swaps?

Sorry a newbie to this.

I think so. I always like a postcard to be sent "through the mail" and not protected in any way.
A postcard is just that, a piece of cardboard with a picture on one side and an destination address, a stamp and hopefully some text on the back.

All the traces left by the postal service are part of the appeal. Over the last two exchanges, I've had only one card that came looking like it had gone through a cheese grater.

LeonY: Mine arrived today - thank you. Yours is the first to arrive & all the way from Oz (I'm in the UK). I like the old Agfa postcard stock - it's a really nice colour.

Off to Barcelona for the day next week on business and I'll take my Pola postcards then.

Recieved a wonderful postcard from Leon :) Mine will probably be mid/late June. I finished exams yesterday, so I have a bit more time, but if I wait until I go back to college next wednesday I can use their darkroom, so possibly do proper prints!

I still have a bunch of materials from the last exchange. I'm using up the last of the paper since they already been cut to size from the original 18 x 24inch (45x61cm) sheet. Also used some of the slightly bad cut reject paper I didnt use last year. I'm just too cheap and lazy. :D

EDIT: used a few different photos, so not all will be the same.

How'd you do the title part on an image like that?
Title: Re: Time for a New Post Card Exchange, anyone want to play? [now with instructions]
Post by: tkmedia on June 07, 2013, 08:44:18 AM
that was the only part that was computer aided because I wanted the 'official logo' but can be done 100% analog without a computer with similar techniques using letraset.

Xerographics! stolen logo! photoshop rest of text, use old fuse type laser printer, printed backwards. cut each title from paper, heat titles (toaster ovens are great for this) sandwich on top of card to transfer toner.  cyanotype process, develop, wash, dry. heat card use more paper lift toner.

but I think maybe easy way is maybe computer print on transparency overlay and use over the exposure process, which I have also done.
I was previously in the extinct wet print industry, prepping negatives and bits of plate making.

I didn't read this thread early enough to join, but it's been very interesting to read along. Is this a yearly event? Will there be a gallery with the postcards when everyone has received them all? I'm so intrigued and would love to see the pictures. And if there's another one next year, I may have gathered up the guts and the goods by then to be able to participate! :)

Adam I find it very hard to do postcards with this process. Larger sizes are easier IMO. As small errors in coating or exposure on larger sheets are not as noticeable compared to the small postcard.

I only mailed out half of them, for some strange reason some of them have faded too much, this never happened so fast before. Usually they get darker. I was unable to restore them with my usual methods. Will have to redo a few.

What´s the consensus? Send in envelope (and hope it preserves the card) or send it as a postcard and hope you have a more considerate mailman than I. Received two cards so far, and they have both been jammed into the mailbox and crumpled.

My batch arrived today, will be sending them on Monday.

And thanks to Piet, his Polaroid emulsion lift arrived today, though as mentioned a bit worse for wear.

I usually put a bag or a small box attached to my mailbox with the word "POSTCARD" written on it. When the postman isn't too dumb, he puts the card in it.

I'm lucky, our new postman usually slips the card in between two bills before putting it in the box. It's pretty rare that the gas and electric company bills are welcome in my box :)

I know I sent out all cards. If you dont get a card let me know.

Most of my cards are individually made all of them are a bit different. I used three different photos, in cyanotype. Some are positive images others are negatives. Halfway thru the prints I started adding some photo montage collage style additions, basic letter stickers, letraset rub-on letters, or some weird combination of such. One, I even sent with a negative dup overlay sandwich. Some are rectangular cards others are more square.

For the first time in decades, I am racing home to check my mailbox! The only time it has anything good in it these days is if I bought something from eBay, haha, but this is the first time in ages where unexpected and fun things are arriving!!

I got Piet's transfer too, is is awsome! (And the back is nice too)

And Adam, I got your moody farmhouse shot, mighty purdy.

Tony, you make me want to do cyanotypes again as they are so beautiful to look at and hold. (I do not think I will be looking for APS film players tho - inside joke for listeners to FPP, haha)

And Paul, your shot got things off to an epic start. It is a crazy image.

To all of you, the only thing bad about this has been making me sweat what I  sending you (I think my spam filter ate my first copy of my address list but I hope to print this week).

And thanks to Diane for getting this going.

Just a quick note to say thank you to those who've sent me postcards so far. I'll respond in more detail soon.

I'm hoping my photos will be back from the printers next week, so I should be able to send out by the due date.

However, this has been a very sad week. Charlie, my former boss, best mate and best man went to work on Monday morning but never got home. He had a massive heart attack and died in the office. I can't believe it. I'm still numb.

He was 55 years old, an apparently healthy, fit (some would say skinny) non-smoker and low-volume drinker, I always expected him to outlast me by decades, even though I am only a couple of years younger.

His funeral is next Friday and I've been asked to stand up and say a few words - which I'm truly dreading. I'm also chosing the music - as that was our big "connection" initially. It's a humanist / atheist funeral, so it'll be some uplifting and raucous rock music. He would have hated to bow out to anything else.

Sorry if I'm not around for a week or two but I can't even think about photography right now.

Thoughts are with you Late.....

Got yours today Diane, gorgeous piece of work. Mine have gone off today, my apologies to the queen if she is offended by some of the stamp positioning, sum of you will see what I mean. Plus as it was my first attempt at dry mounting if your card arrives without an image on the front please let me know and I will resend. It was my solution to not sending in an envelope and not wanting my print to get mangled. Hope you like?

After an insanely busy week I finally have time to thank properly for the cards that made their way this week - 8 of them so far , all beautiful, those that especially caught my eye were Diane wonderful card, LeonY's and Urban's BW work and Harve's abstract - really excellent! Also a huge thanks to David for the "impossible card" - as a matter of fact it is a first polaroid that I ever had in my hands.. I hope it won't prove too expensive an experience.. :))

Wow Andrej, that was quick! I only sent out the cards on Wednesday. And thanks for the compliment!

Unfortunately, I have to admit that I haven't had the time to really look at everyone's cards. I will get back to you with praise when I've figured out how to hang them on the wall :)

I too have got Urban's very nice storefront card since last. My lot went in the mail today A prioritere. Sorry for the delay, but stamps for overseas postage are getting difficult to get hold of, your cornershop news agent no longer has them, post offices only. And most of them have been shut down. :(

I have been so delighted to get David (zapsnaps) fantastic polaroid from Madrid which looks like a totally edible giant jelly baby. Andrej's brilliant lith print and a stunner from Urban of a french storefront, many thanks guys, they certainly chase these grey skies away!

Thanks Francois and Diane so glad you enjoyed them ;-)

Late D, I'm sad to hear of you loss, my thoughts will be with you as you say your goodbyes and celebrate his life next Friday...

Arriving home yesterday I was thrilled to find FOUR more cards have arrived :D :D :D :D

Andrej - thank you so much! Was a fantastic sepia letterbox and stuffed newspaper! Somewhere along the way the card became torn, but the card has been repaired carefully with clear tape - your word were prophetic ;)

Urban - thank you for your wonderful corner shop front postcard, I must re-visit France some day!

David, thank you for "wasting" a Polaroid on me :D  All my friends have been asking 'how did he make that print?' haha! I've told them this is secret ancient photographic magic and to handle it with care and encouraging them to experiment with film.

And thank you Diane for your lovely overlaid scene of ghostly comfort, what a neat method! Fab circular globe stamp too!

I feel so rich to be amongst so many talented people!

After an initial flood of postcards the last week brought no joy to my mailbox. I began formulating conspiracy theories about my postal carrier. Perhaps he was a shadowy photophile who was stealing my postcards in order to add to his collection of illicitly gained images. Yeah, he looks the type to be sitting with the shades drawn, sniffing the photos, hoping to catch the lingering scent of leftover fixer. But thankfully today's mail shot that theory down in flames as I received two excellent photographs. Urban Hafner's neat street shot from Grenoble and Steve's moody English woodscape made my day. Thanks guys, I really dig these photos!

I've got a selection of beautiful cards from Urban, Andrej, Diane, Irvin, Francois, Shaun, Andy and Leon. They are amazing! Proudly hanging on my wall. I only finished exams the week before last, so I'm a little behind. I'm trying to do cyanotypes, but not getting very far yet! Hopefully I'll send on time, but they may end up as very digital prints.

Thank you everyone :)

Same here!

Four yesterday: Shaun's, Urban's, Andrej's, and David's Impossible print (unscathed and impressively unpostmarked). Two from Monday: Irvin and Andy. I just deleted my enthusiastic commentary on everyone's work to avoid the spoiler, just in case! But fantastic work all around. I think the exchange excites my wife as much as me.

My postcards just came back from the printer on Thursday, so I'll be addressing and mailing them today over breakfast (or at least coffee). Nothing like a deadline!

Finally, my postcards are off! Talk anout sliding under the deadline!! I have been lazy lately and only scanning, so I needed to get new darkroom chemistry (nervously hopes fixer is OK,haha).

BTW, the stamps i used may be reinforcing a stereotype of it always being winter in canada (despite most of you living north of my town, haha). So no,we do not always use "frosty the snowman" stamps ;-) it is just the only mail I seem to do anymore is the occasional Xmas card, so I used this as a fun way to clean out the stamp collection!

I just wanted to check in...

I have received a number of absolutely amazing cards, and they are all sitting on my kitchen table waiting for more in depth reviewing.

For one reason or another, I have been traveling every weekend since April and have not been home, except for those few days off that fall in the middle of the week. Other than that I have been all over the state of Texas, and over to Louisiana more times than I can remember - and I'll be heading back again in three weeks. We've put over 5,000 miles on the brand new car that we bought on April 20th, if that gives you any indication.

I have every intention of completing an afternoon of intense printing very soon and hope to get things in the mail ASAP. Between this exchange and the APUG exchange, I have something like 45 cards to print, and I insist on doing it by hand sooooo......

Anyway, thank you for your patience, and I apologize!
