Title: Summer Postcard Swap
Post by: astrobeck on May 09, 2012, 05:48:16 PM
Announcing a new postcard exchange, "The Summer Postcard Swap"

The rules are the same but if you're new here, this is how it goes:

1)   Sign up by May 31 if you want to play.
PM me your name and address with country and e-mail.
I need your e-mail address to contact you since the forum only allows two private messages an hour.  If you don't send me your e-mail, it will take a LOT longer to get your list of names.

2)   Names will be sorted on June 3.
Since we have Filmwasters from around the globe, I'll sort and divide the collected names into manageable groups (about 12 per group) to keep the cost of printing and postage at a manageable level.
Next I'll make a list of the sorted names and addresses and send them to everyone that signed up by June 3.

3)   Postcards should be sent out by June 30.
Cards can be printed in the darkroom or with inkjet printers on any paper (6x4 or 5x7 inches)
The important thing is the negative used to make the print must be a film capture.

The subject matter is entirely up to you and it's not a competition either, so have fun with it!

You can send the same print to everyone on your list, or you can make different prints for each person, it's up to you.

Details about the image such as location, camera and film type written on the back with a short message are appreciated but not required.

Stamp, address and then sign the card so we know who it's from and drop it in the mail and then wait for amazing cards to arrive in your post box.

This is always a lot of fun, so don't miss out.

Once again the important dates to remember are:

May 31= last day to sign up.
June 3=names sorted into groups and sent to participants.
June 30= deadline to send out cards.

Thanks!
astrobeck, your humble postcard wrangler.

I'm in this time ;D
The important thing is the negative used to make the print must be a film capture.

I've been playing around with Cyanotypes lately, the thing is I'm scanning 135 or 120 film to create an enlarged digital negative, does this still count?

As long as the original capture was with film, you're good.

I already ordered 24 postcards so could I have the entire list just so I can mail one to all?
..that doesn't mean I expect everyone to send me one..I just want to be able to send out all the cards I have ordered.

Post by: astrobeck on May 23, 2012, 03:55:32 PM
I don't see a problem with your generous offer Diane.

If anyone else wants to send to the entire list, just let me know.

Just be cool with not getting a card from the 'extra' names that are not on your exchange list.

The list is still growing and will grow a bit more before May 31, the final day to add names.
Currently the name count is 22.

Hi Jack!  I have used a local printer at least 4 times and they do excellent work! I also tried MOO once and they were also very good, and within my budget!
Title: Re: Summer Postcard Swap
Post by: astrobeck on May 30, 2012, 05:57:16 PM
Jack and others....

You can also have them printed at a one hour lab, then use adhesive to stick them to watercolor or some other art type paper to make cards.

Have fun!

Who did you order your postcards through? Any tips?
I always drymount or spraymount some real photos (rubber glue can also be used). I find that for low volumes like that, it's worth it.
I checked out my local Staples last year and their postcard stock was so thin it probably wouldn't have survived through the mail.

I find that prints done with instant printers that use a dry process don't like being rubbed during shipping. A bit of abrasion makes some colors disappear in some spots and the image looks weird. Inkjet is fine as long as it doesn't get rained on. From what I've heard, my Fuji Crystal Archive prints survived pretty good last year.

Geez! How come us domestic shipping is so friggin cheap!
Here in the Great North (Canada), Domestic is 0.61$, US 1.05$ and international 1.80$

I was thinking of ordering some postcards from moo.com - I've got business cards from them before and their quality has been pretty good. Minimum order is 20, but then I'm sure I can always find a use for some extra postcards. Has anybody used them for this?
Title: Re: Summer Postcard Swap
Post by: Phil Bebbington on June 02, 2012, 12:26:27 AM
Ordinal, I have used them a few times and the quality of the cards is great.

For those with an iphone you might take a look at hugmail or hugmail.com - I think that you can only use it from the UK, but, you can basically upload a photo which is then printed and posted for you. You can buy credits that include the postage to anywhere in the world very a VERY reasonable price. I have tetsted the service a few times to the UK and once to Crete and it seems to work fine.

Sending postcards from US to Canada or Mexico is $0.85. Maybe that's why the USPS is loosing tons of money? Canada Post... I hate Canada Post. ;D They have lost so many of my packages, it's unbelievable.
Title: Re: Summer Postcard Swap
Post by: tkmedia on June 02, 2012, 04:33:52 AM
I'm thinking about doing a different card size for the domestic US as it could be up to 6 x 11 inch for $0.45 shipped... Maybe I should think more about producing a decent photo instead of logistics.  :'(

Canada Post... I hate Canada Post. ;D They have lost so many of my packages, it's unbelievable.
I don't blame you. So far, I got empty ripped envelopes, mail from another street that isn't even in my neighborhood, a special order from the camera store in Montreal that arrived with a 3 inch hole on the side, ripped magazines (split almost all the way in two), bent magazines with a broken spine and mail with snot on it which I had to wash under the tap before opening it... That's pretty hard to beat...

Finally, all the names have been drawn and sorted and you, my fun-loving filmwasting postcard making friends have all been sent messages with your list of names and addresses that you are to send cards to.

Cards should be mailed by June 30, so there's plenty of time to get them printed and sent.

If you did not get your list, please let me know.
If your address is wrong, please let me know.

Otherwise have a great time making and receiving your cards.

This has been a lot of fun for me already, and I can't wait to see and hear about all the amazing cards arriving in mailboxes.  This is truly the exciting part of this!!!

Thanks again!
Becky, your humble postcard wrangler

Pants as in Gale force winds and driving rain, haven't seen much in the way of sun for a while now.

It's pretty rare around here to see a square postcard as it costs a lot more to mail. The automatic machines don't handle them good so they have to be manually sorted...

Ahaaaaa, then I get it. Was a bit confused, cause most of my pics are square. LOL We got a really good lab in Sweden, where you can get a lot of different sizes, even in postcards. I always use them for the stuff I dont print myself.

Becky's postcard just arrived..Perfect black & white..i love it!

Me too! Fantastic shot, Becky!

I have received three, but the ones I ordered printed from Moo should arrive tomorrow or Saturday, so I can send them out before I hit that all-important "received more than half you've sent" point.

How long ago did you place your MOO order?

I've had cards from Piet, Miles and Paul this week.  I'm not sure what surprises me most, the individuality of subject matter or the range of techniques.   Brilliant.

I have received three, but the ones I ordered printed from Moo should arrive tomorrow or Saturday, so I can send them out before I hit that all-important "received more than half you've sent" point.

How long ago did you place your MOO order?

I ordered them on Tuesday, and I got a dispatch notification yesterday, and they arrived this morning. Which is pretty fast turnaround.

I'm really not happy with the print quality, though. They're horribly grainy and the tones are all messed up on the B&W - they're worse than my cheap inkjet printing on budget 4x6 paper, and certainly nowhere as good as the (now four! thanks Piet, Sandeha, Miles, Paul!) cards I've received myself. I've sent a complaint about it.

I suppose at this rate I'll probably end up going to a shop, having some printed as normal photos and then gluing them onto card.

EDIT: To be fair, Moo have now got back to me with apologies, saying it was a production error that wasn't caught, and that they'll reprint and send them back out. So, I should have some replacements next week, which hopefully will be a lot better.

have not been on in a while -

i got 3 beautiful cards during the week . . .

Sandeha - wonderful double exposure  ;)
Piet - bedankt voor de mooie kaart! love the transfer, something I have yet to try.
Miles - great b+w card, i like your innovation - works well.

thanks so far guys - love the script on the card telling how and where the images were taken.

I have been shooting some colour and b+w over the last 2 weeks so hope to develop the b+w today and probably not going to get the colour done for a week or so.

...so the DIY cards most likely will be b+w and sent out next week.

great idea to wrangle this together - again - thanks becky!

All sent out, ran out of paper and chem... Hopefully they will arrive in good shape. Much harder to do on small postcard size as I needed more precision, as I was cutted up larger sheets of paper, some a bits skewed. Would have been easier and constant if buy already made sized, but what fun will that be? Looks like I was on the UK list... was expecting more from other countries. ;)

I can't fault their customer service to be honest - they sent a refund as soon as I asked for it, no messing about. I'll happily use them in the future for, say, business cards (I love their little half-size ones) or stickers. Maybe their machines are having a bad week.

It's been a bit manic at work - and not in a good way, unfortunately  >:(

Anyway, the shot is chosen and Moo are in the process of printing them. I got an update saying that they anticipate they should be with me 29/06. Hopefully, I'll have a better experience than Ordinal. First time I've ordered anything from them. Easy enough process but I'll reserve judgement until they arrive.

Off to Manchester for 3 days from tomorrow - so it'll be quiet from me until weekend. I've received some stunning cards so far from Britt, Shaun (Harvey), Becky, Urbanhafner and Francois. I'll be delighted if mine get anywhere remotely near that level of quality....

Actually, I'm pretty sure the print is from a dye sub machine like those instant photo kiosks!

These layer thin wax film on top of each other and finish up with a protective layer. Since B&W is made of the CMYK layers with black as the top, as soon as it rubs on the mail sorting machines, the black layer goes and you can end up with strange effects.

Now, for the position of this "blotch", I call it serendipity :)

You're right I think, Francois.  Under the microscope there's a scuff that goes down two sharp-edged layers to the white below.

It does look great.   :)

I've been remiss in my postcard updates!

To recap: Britt, Diane, Becky, Francois, Urban, Harvey, Shaun, and most recently Keith and Matt!

They are all fantastic. For those of you who haven't seen Keith's yet, you're in for a treat. Shaun, my wife is going to steal that postcard when I'm not looking, she's in love with your beautiful still life. Urban, fantastic framing, love those Acros blacks with that flipped lens. Do you just trim the 120 roll to fit? Diane, now that I've seen the original image I'm disappointed I didn't get a foot-long postcard ;) . And Matt, just fantastic, love that grain, and the exposure is perfect, it just draws you in.

Francois, I think you and I are the only two who chose color in our group! Love those repeating patterns and hues, and I suspect it'll be a haunting image for the UKers this year. ;) I toured part of the Olympic pavilion in Barcelona in the late '90s and it had the same strange emotional tug-of-war: all sharp and inspiring and magnificent and empty and dusty. It would be hard for me not to spend Saturdays there reading apocalyptic fantasy novels with a sack lunch.

Jack, thank you...I had considered sending the postcard in its original size but was worried the postal services would catch an end and tear it to smitherines..as it was my printers printed a bit too dark for my taste but I decided to quit worrying and just send it!

Just got a nice card from Matt. Now wow, this has such a vintage feel!
I just wonder at what time you had to get up to get such nice fog?
I traced the place back on streetview and it's pretty weird how the place looks nothing like the card when taken under a sunny sky!

If I can remember it was about 8am, I started my wonder around town that morning at 7am.
It only really gets foggy here in December.

Glad you liked it.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the wonderful and interesting postcards that I have received from this swap.  Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances I have had to move house and have also had a new baby daughter over the last 4 weeks so I have not sent mine out yet - but rest assured that this week I will get a card out to all of you from my new home in the center of the UK (moved away from the coast :().

You're welcome!
I actually put clear nail polish on my filter to get the effect . Picking a sky filter that I reuse by cleaning with acetone. & I had the lab process the film for me, in c-41.

If you are still one of the very few who have not sent your cards...please do so we can wrap this thing up.

We don't want this running into the Christmas print circle, so lets hustle folks!
And thanks again to all who joined in, this was one of the best swaps so far with such a high level of creativity and down right coolness with film and cameras.

Apologies to one and all for the delay in sending mine out. The printers didn't cover themselves in glory (had to be sent back to be re-printed), work commitments and then our holiday to Marrakesh all got in the way.

Anyway, hope you like them. You should all have got an Olympic stanp as well (not sure if any of you are philatelists but they're a bit better than the standard UK first class stamps).

Paul.

PS - I've loved every single one of the cards I've received and I'm putting a scrapbook together to keep them all safe.
