Title: Meet the Filmwasters
Post by: Phil Bebbington on August 31, 2010, 06:30:51 PM
I have no idea if this has ever been done before.

Anyway, it's all about self portraits. Do you take them, have you ever taken them? Do you find the process interesting?

So, if you have taken them then show us versions of you that you like and if you haven't taken them, please do. Let's see who we talk to on a daily basis. We get to see great photos and see our friends. It's a no brainer really.

I took this of me yesterday. Inspired by Ed's tilt and shift thread I swung my lazy ass into action and had a play with my Hasselblad FlexBody which really ain't getting much use. Shot on Fuji instant film - 4 photos took me 2 hours, self portraits with the FlexBody is slow!

Rarely take pics of myself but I can live wth this...

Process: Shot with a Nikon FE2 (50mm) - Boots 400 slide film and then transferred to Fuji FP-100c.
Reflected from a Ron Arad sculpture earlier this year.

That is an awesome shot Phil! Very intense to my eye. Your look and the tilt shift together make it intense for me. And I love the color. I have no idea what the rig you used for this shot looks like and Im so curious. I didnt realize you could use instant film in a Hasselblad camera.

I really hate seeing myself so I dont like taking self portraits but as it happens, I do have quite a few from my last semester. It was a people photography class and most of the time the only people I could shoot was myself.

This is a double exposure done on purpose on a Holga 135. Like I said, I hate seeing myself in pictures and double exposures are a really great way to hide myself in the shot. LOL! I know, sort of defeats the purpose of taking a self portrait but hey, its the best I could make myself do.

Ooh Miller! I could live with that too!! What gorgeous color! Love the fun house mirror look. Did you take that in front of a fun house mirror?

Mojove - That's very cool ...

Me via the baby Yash. Inspired to change to the double exp (via Gimp ... is that allowed, both shot on film  :)

It was only after developing this shot that I realised the trouble it could have got me into - taken in a ladies clothes shop, I was sitting outside the changing rooms happily clicking away to relieve the boredom whilst Deanne tried on yet another outfit.   :-[

Great stuff from all.

Ian, at least you spared us the one in women's clothes although I'm sure you turn a good ankle!

Erin, I hate myself in photos also, I started to take them as a reaction to that dislike. I have found it quite liberating and interesting. By its nature the self portrait process can be slow, I enjoy that pace, the need to look at what I am doing carefully as I am at both ends of the camera so to speak. The very shallow depth of field with the FlexBody is also challenging. Having something to focus on when you are behind the camera has its problems.

Miller. thank you for living with it for us!

Miles, Nice one and great stuff, Calbisu.

Come on filmwasters, no excuse - waste some film!

Francois, stand down! Damion will find it by himself before too long.

 ;)

We have done SP's before, Phil. Specifically here http://www.filmwasters.com/collaborations/v/17/, but the make-up of the forum has changed in the later year and it's wonderful seeing some new SP's. Also, I always cackle with glee when all you photographer types bleat on about preferring to be behind the camera  ;) :D Take a taste of your own medicine, people...expose yourselves.

That said, it is nice that Phil kept his rear end (shapely as it is) hidden from the Filmwasters public on this occasion  :D :D

I quite like taking SP's when I get the time...which isn't often. I do plan a lot of them which I then don't follow through with; pretty much the way with all of my photography. A lot of thinking with very little to show for it.

Here is one from March. I use it as my FW avatar so it'll look familiar, although it lacks a certain punch at 90x90 pixels  :) I used the Tachihara 5x4, but shot it on the smaller (100 series) Polacolor 125i film with the usual stain on the print. The unconvincing stubble isn't a permanent feature. When he saw this online, my Dad thought it was a photo of him from 30 years ago...which was kind of spooked me out and made me happy at the same time.

 like this one, Ed.

Yes, I decided to keep my clothes on this time! So many new faces, I'd hate to scare them all off  :-[

Yeah, photographers always complain about being in front of the lens - it is an oddly addictive process and I feel quite useful to do.

Yes, you lot - photos please, NOW! Think of it as a collaboration with a prize although it isn't and it hasn't - hey, self adoration is true filmwasting!

Thank you Calbisu!! You flatter me.  :)

Windy, love that you're in the ladies clothes section with the camera taking a self portrait. Its like a day in the life of the other half. Its awesome!!!

Miles, liked both shots but I like the d.e. the most. You look like you were on a train when you took the shot.

Phil, thank you for the camera porn!!! I get it a little now. Is that your rig? And I totally understand shooting self portraits to fight against the dislike of them. By the end of the semester I think I actually got to the point where seeing the shots didnt trigger my flight or fight response. LOL!

Thank you so much Suzi!!!

Damion, love both the shots a lot but am drawn to the collage more. I find photo collages of a single subject fascinating and I dearly love them and I think yours is one of the best I've seen. A new favorite of mine. My other top favorite is the collage of images of Hwy 138. Im ashamed that I cant remember the photogs name but I learned about him in school.

That is some camera Sapata, and an awesome self portrait. Love your thoughtful expression.

Beck

Are you sure this is a self portrait and not a picture of your twin?

The only self portrait I have taken recently was for the collaboration mention previously.
However seems like I should go and waste some film and make some.

No art here, just a happy-snap (note my Phil / Ian-style smile). Konica Wai-Wai reloaded with XP2 Super - 17mm and a mirror on the front makes self-portraits pretty easy, even while driving I-95! A great thread! See ya! Skj.

Why is smiling for a self-portrait so difficult?

Love this thread! There are some amazingly beautiful/thoughtful/creative images in here!

Ed - I don't know why but that photo of you makes me want to give you a hug! Its lovely!

Andrea - I honestly could not love your portrait more! Its so scary (in the hauntingly mysterious sense of the word, not the 'I am going to eat your brains/slash your guts open' kind of way). I looked at it for a really long time.

Its only in the last few years that I have actually started to enjoy doing the odd self portrait. I think there is something kind of liberating about it (like Phil said) now. Maybe its something to do with coming out of awkward teenage years too, and helping to finding out what kind of person I actually consider myself to be in the real world :)

This one was more just about playing with the film (polaroid fade to black). I needed to shoot something close to hand to test it out and my face happened to be the nearest thing!

It's not that amazing. Plus that's my crappy watercolour paper... ran out of already cut-down to size Arches Platine which is nice and smooth :( Need to get out the big paper cutter and spend a few hours cutting down the next batch of paper.

plus that's a really unflattering angle for my double chin. eesh. And my chest  :-[

I think its great too, I think its the feeling of tranquility in the eyes, you just look relaxed which considering it can't of been comfy on those apples :D
I also like the textured paper....
As for bad angles that's a little too much self-depreciation, I wish I was braver, I think there are only 3-4 images existing of me since I was 14 (when I took up photography)
I'd like to try another, like the one Bill Brandt in a mirror without seeing the camera.

Come on Heather... the picture is really good.
I think you underestimate it a lot. It makes you look a little chubbier... so what? I still find the pose quite nice. And no matter what you think about it, it won't change the fact we all think you're sweet and imaginative (and pretty gutsy to do cyanos!)

OK, a quick shot taken yesterday. I decided to frame myself for a shot. Only thing is I had to use my favorite voice activated remote triggering device... which also goes by the name "mom" :)
Polaroid 600... first pack I tried was totally cooked so I had to take another one out of the fridge.

Fantastic new editions!

Heather, I dig the shot and I love the angle. You look relaxed but deep in thought, like you're mulling over the meaning of life or something. Not sure that would have come across from another angle.

Francois, you positively GLOW in that shot. Did you have to say MOM for the remote to work? Just curious.

Well... she was waiting for my cue...
The cue was more like explaining how the camera works since the flash only charges then the button is pressed half way :)

I wasn't thinking of any others work when I shot it... I just took an old frame I had found that was lying in the garden shed, dusted it off and used it... as for the mesmerizing technical talk and strange device naming, it's always been a geek hobby of mine :)

Title: Re: Meet the Filmwasters
Post by: gregor on September 06, 2010, 07:40:33 AM
Hi Ed, thanks for the welcome back. Took a lot of shots: a few packs of polaroid, a few rolls of 36 exposure 35mm and a 100 or so digital shots (weeded down to about 50 on the plane ride back).

Just got back today, with considerable jet lag (as I expected).  Developing film and scanning polaroid on tuesday this week (will post some on FW). Took 3 cameras w/me. 2 leicas (M3 and a d-lux 4) and a polaroid. Regret not taking the Plaubel, but since I was walking for 6 - 8 hours a day, my back appreciates the smaller cameras! If I had my way I would have packed a couple 6x6 cameras as well, but my spouse was insistent on 2 shoulder bags and one small suitcase to keep it simple.

I'll be putting up a standalone site from the trip and post a pointer to it since it will be a mixed bag of film and shots from the d-lux....

I thought I'd come home with a russian camera or two but found very few for sale: a antique shop in Vilnius' Old Town run by a russian with an assortment of feds, zenits and zorkis is various stages of malfunction  (he had a lubitel with a broken viewfinder that I fixed for him) all at higher than ebay prices - way higher than ebay in the case of the lubitel and 3 weary looking moskova 5s. In another shop - a bookstore with two cases of memorabilia - was a perkeo in a case next to another case holding a framed photo of hitler and SS patches and medallions amongst other nazi paraphernalia . As attractive as the perkeo was, I couldn't fathom giving the shop any money due to their wide assortment of nazi memorabilia and books. Thinking I was walking into your normal run of the mill used bookstore, those cases took me by surprise in a bad way...  In Kanaus I found an non-working and unidentifiable early TLR.

Our friends, who we met up with in Vilnius said they saw a lot of russian cameras in several shops in kronenberg - which wasn't on our itinerary...

Nonetheless, the trip was good as it's also good to be back.

Peter's shed is fabulous and might even be bigger than mine ;)
Harvey totally looks like one of my friends in the theatre group! It's a bit uncanny. Needs to grow a bit of a goatee to be a proper doppleganger, though. On the plus side, my friend is nowhere near the 1960s birthyears so you don't look that old...

Might go take another self portrait today. We'll see how the weather holds out...

Yes, I missed a trick there. A pint of cider in hand would have completed it. Even my wife said the same.

And nope, no TV behind the camera. Just a BBQ and a shredder. Neither of which make good entertainment to watch.

My wife and I have a series from before we were married, all shot at arm's length so we're always crowding the frame, but over the years we've been good at squeezing in the surroundings over Molly's shoulder or between our heads. There are some that I love just because of the quirk: sopping wet on the back of a fishing boat, the Eiffel tower jutting over Molly's shoulder, the first picture outside the hospital with our daughter.

Some day I'll collect them all into one book (and fan the pages to watch myself age), but alas, none at hand. You'll have to do with one from four years ago, screwing around with the self-timer during a horrendously slow winter commute. Dome lights abaze.

Love it!

Thank you for all those that have added to this thread.

I can't speak for others, but, I love to attach a face to the name. I see all of you as friends and so want to see in my minds eye who I am addressing.

Not sure if I ever posted this one - 600SE

Oh BOY have I had an awesome time reading back through this thread this evening (instead of working, which is what I'm supposed to be doing). I was in on it at the start and then missed the next 18 months for whatever reason (including Skorj's bump from last year and the suggestions that we make this sticky), but have enjoyed reading through it again and seeing all of the new posts.

Peter's shed shot is still astonishing...and I agree, he could have done with a pint of something in his hand.
Lawrie's work environment looks like hell....it must really get you down, mate  ;)
Phil clearly loves it. The whole thing.
Nigel....the word 'lemons' springs to mind.
Mauricio, that's a toilet, dude. Get out and take some pictures in another room sometime!  ;D
Miller, this little excerpt (http://www.script-o-rama.com/movie_scripts/h/harder-they-come-script-transcript.html) is for you:

Tell me something. Haven't I seen you with Jose somewhere before?
Which Jose that?
The same one that send the police after me, and I shoot him off the bike.

To be honest though, I loved them all. Cheers.

Finally, and in honour of Sean's dedication to the cause in posing for that shot with a 10 pound camera hanging off his wrist, here's a second photo of me ("Ambassador with this gift you are spoiling us!"). This was taken in late 2010 by Leon and is notable because it's on INSTANT FILM and also because it manages to make my son look like the devil...which he's not....not all of the time anyway.

I got my portrait taken at Focus On Imaging in Birmingham yesterday so I thought I'd update this thread. This is scanned from an 8x10 paper neg and then cropped slightly.

classy, ed! did they use that positive paper or do you mean that you scanned a positive and inverted it?
Title: Re: Meet the Filmwasters
Post by: Ed Wenn on March 08, 2012, 02:59:51 PM
They used paper for the neg and then they used the paper neg to produce a positive image afterwards in their mobile darkroom (well, OK, the neg had to be developed in the darkroom first, obviously). The neg has significantly more detail on it than the positive though, so when I got home I scanned the paper neg and then inverted that in P'shop to produce the image above.

The image seems exceptionally sharp so, any idea what technical details where used with the orginal paper neg?  exposure time, pre\post flashing etc?

Mike, I think you're confusing me with someone who knows what you're talking about  :D Leon would be better placed to answer those type of questions. My only answer as to why it's so sharp is that it's an 8x10 neg and the camera apparently had a £3000 lens on it....both of those will be key factors I'd have thought. I'll alert Leon to your questions though and ask him to add any tech info; he spent a few mins talking through the process with Neil from Harman while we were on the stand and we got a trip 'backstage' to their darkroom so he probably has a pretty good idea how they cooked it all up.

Me!

tech details (for Mike et al):

8x10 paper negative using Ilford Cooltone MGIV RC glossy paper in a HUGE camera with a bloody expensive lens on the front (not sure which) and a variety of flags lights and strange upside down tent things and silver umbrellas etc.

They were using a 00 mg filter on the front of the lens as contrast was a problem.  I don't know if they were pre or post flashing (didn't ask, sorry), but if they were, it was not in-camera, so maybe in the darkroom. before they loaded/ or before they develop.

The paper neg print was dev'd in a dry to dry machine (ilfo lab thingy), then contact printed onto the same paper. They tried the pearl surface, but this lost too much sharpness, so the glossy was best.

My positive print is really sharp, but this is a scan from the neg to try to get more detail out.

Hope that helps.

L.

New Member to Filmwasters, Hi Phil and Ed!

this is my reflective hobby and not, by any means a profession, yet.
It is one I have only recently rediscovered as a passion in the last two years. I have slowly revealed to myself that, through using film and slowing down and making deliberate decisions, and coincidental mistakes that I can learn from, as a thought process and method for self discovery; is more valuable and meaningful to me than the digital imagery process. I still use digital but the film process simply enhances value over quantity in my life.

I am Honored to be among such great wasters of film. thanks and greetings! Scott Aka

old school jays was the best!
Still, I miss the old Expos vs Jays days...

(For those not into Canadiana, The Blue Jays are a baseball team from Toronto. The expos were from Montreal. There used to be real competition between both cities. But the Montreal team got sold to Washington DC... And now, rappers and black kids wear Expos caps to identify themselves to the city but have no idea we ever had a baseball team...)

D, if I wasn't in the picture right next to you, I dare say you'd look better. It's all about context and relativity. Crop it and you'll see what I mean.

Diane: Yes, it's a great photo. Nigel has a great eye and is ably abetted by that fantastic Holga of his. Probably the best Holga lens I've ever seen. I didn't think they made them this badly anymore. After about 2007 it seemed they upped their production techniques and started producing a relaible product....which is good and bad  :) The result was that I got bored of all Holga photos looking the same unlike Dianas and clones where pretty much every camera lens produces different results (which is why we all have at least 3  ;) )....until Nigel's came along and brought back memories of older Holgas. Fantastic.

Taken with a mint green Imperial Savoy camera with film almost as old as the camera.  I had a couple of rolls of Rexall Drug Store b/w film from 1963, and I think the camera was made around 1961, so it was a match made in Heaven!  Might be a bit grainy, tho'.

Absolutely!

And oh, the Rexall! I bought many a box of jawbreakers there. And Lemonheads.

Barely too young to have bought film there, though. Maybe a roll of 110 for a toy camera that would now be worth a Lomo mint.

I do have fond visual memories of the Fotomat huts in every grocery and drug store parking lot. If I still lived in the contiguous 48 states I'd probably go Fotomat hut hunting as a photo series.

It's not anything fancy it's just an enlarger sitting on top of a wheeled cart with shelves where I store the other darkroom parts. Like most Japanese homes we have a bath room that is divided into two parts one "dry" and one "wet" -- enlarger goes in the former and chemical stuff goes in the latter. When I'm done I pack everything up and wheel it back into the closet.

Hello all.
First post from me on here, must say - love this forum.
Big hat tip to all contributors! I just recently found out that film and photography was the thing for me, and must say I find great pleasure in the gear as well as in the actual picture taking.  I Found the forum after swapping my GRD for a  GR1 as my "go everywhere" camera, searching for info about it.

Me to the right, at my friends summerhouse last year, taken with timer, about two feet of books and a Yashica T4 with my first roll of Tri-x. Developed at a lab. Been taking about a roll a week sins then, but still not developed a single one of them. The plan is to do it my self, soonish.  Should anyone be in the Oslo area and fancy a walk I would be more than happy to function as a guide.

Cheers,
Aksel

After lurking for a bit then throwing my two cents in now and then, my pal tintin said introductions to the crew were needed, so here we are ;-)

I am Don (and show up as mcduff or dsmccrac online). Except for a five year period I have been a filmwaster for too long to publicly admit!

But for a few years I got lazy and was just shooting the DSLR. It is now getting ignored! For the last month, I am in the darkroom again (I was just scanning negs for this first part of my return to film) and that feels like coming home. While the scanned neg shows better on line, i thought i would introduce myself with one of my first prints in five+ years...

I am out there in Flickr as dsmccrac - I have not been super active the past month or so as I have been printing lately - and scanning prints of negs I have already scanned seems a little redundant, haha.

(rant)

We wouldn't have any monarchs in "The Commonwealth" if my historical hero (Oliver Cromwell) had a successor with half his tenacity and political acumen. The fop (Charles II) and his various, self-indulgent successors hardly added much to the world, though Victoria was at least fortunate enough to reign at a time when Britain had a few truly great men like Brunel, Darwin, William Armstrong (and a number of others) around. Very few of their calibre around today - particularly in politics.

Agreed. I should really have said "the Parlimentarian cause" instead of direct reference to Cromwell. However, Cromwell was a product of his age and was the perfect antidote for "the divine right of Kings" and to avoid this country to return to the dark ages and a monarchy which itself would have been ruled by the Papacy.

I still believe it's a shame that, as a nation, we reverted to a monarchy - partcularly as quite a few of the ones from (and including) Charles II did their utmost to bankrupt the country, often to support their own indulgences.

A few monarchs and powerful individuals tried to restore a Catholic monarchy since Charles Ist's day (5th November celebrations stand as testimony) but all have failed. Thankfully.

Stemmer nok bra det Ezzie, takk for dét - er "litt" klar for å utforste det stedet der litt mer på sikt kjenner jeg.

Greetings to all Filmwasters ;)

I'm into photography for more than a decade now, though as time passes, digital imaging seems less and less interesting. My Canon gathers dust on the shelf these days... Lately I've been working a lot with classic b&w as well as cross process, pushing, expired films and other experimental techniques. All films I develop myself. Due to my living and working in China, the latest work is and will be based on local themes and portraits. You can see it here:

I'm new here, having collected cameras since I was 9 - but now, after 36 years, realizing I'm becoming more interested in using the cameras and getting pleasing results than in collecting them.  So I'm looking for inspiration and community so I can keep exploring and getting better and having more fun with this.

I'm in Indianapolis. I make software for a living but shoot and write for fun.

Nice to see so much support for my little Olympus. I have a black OM-1, too. I'm also a big Pentax fan, with three K1000s, a KM, and an ME here.  (The ME is actually my favorite SLR.)  I also have a Minolta SR-T 101 and two broken Minolta X700s (both with the dreaded locked winder).  -Jim

now what is this alarming I hear about locked winder?

From what I read it's related to a particular capacitor that goes bad. I keep meaning to get one of my X700s fixed, but I do have so many other SLRs that keep me busy!   And rangefinders, and box cameras, and old folders...  -Jim

definitely some classics here~ some new, some old, some avatars that are fun to see in a larger size~

on that note, I think I'll include a larger version of my avatar I'm using now. one of my first caffenol experiments~

How do you like your 635? I've just acquired one about a month ago and I've been able to get two rolls through it. I love it so much sometimes I want to sleep with it under my pillow!

oh, it's a wonderful camera, christopher!
I really like how the controls are laid out on it -I can hold it in the palm of my left hand with each thumb for the shutter- and aperture dial and focus without a fuss with my right hand. lastly I fire off with one of my index fingers, from my left hand if it's a quickie or with my right hand for slower shutter speeds when I hold it to my chest.

At Phil's suggestion...

My 2nd assignment for my 52 Roll project was self portraits. I've never done them, and certainly don't like them, but these turned out ok I guess. I'll revisit the self portrait later on in the year.

Hi, new to the Filmwasters forum, so a quick self-portrait. Dabble with film on and off, do digital mainly.
Just recently obtained an Olympus Trip 35 from the Freegle email list. Warranty card dated 1979! Works fine.
I used Kodacolour 400CN C41,  the first roll tried with this camera. Had a few frames left but it rained so just sitting in the car and pointing in various directions .... developed and scanned by the AG Lab.

Hi All,
Have been posting for a while but realised never really introduced myself, how rude? Sorry.
So, whilst on a recent trip to the Yorkshire Dales and following an early morning due to insomnia, I ventured down to a nearby fall but the sun rose and caused some contrast issues. I decided to have a coffee, taking in the sights and sounds of one of my favourite waterfalls. Then it hit me, I decided to take a self portrait with this thread in mind as I needed to come out of the closet so to speak.

So here's me, hate having my photo taken, but was a karma moment and sums me up.

Holga pan pinhole.

Hello everyone. I'm Leonore and I'm new here. I was first introduced to the forum this year via Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. My boyfriend (02Pilot) built a pinhole camera to participate and I tagged along with my Lubitel 166B TLR and Olympus 35RC.

I've been shooting film off and on for 20 years - not a profession but a lifelong hobby - starting with the Pentax K100o I bought myself as a college graduation present in 1992 (yes, I just gave my advancing age away...). Since then I've expanded my equipment inventory. I do mainly 35mm, but also have quite fallen in love with medium format. My latest project is my father's 1965 Polaroid Land Camera Automatic 100. My great shame is that I haven't yet learned to develop my own film. That, however, should finally be rectified this summer.

Here's my 'selfie'.

I'm doing a Project 365 (a picture a day for a year) at http://moderndinosaur.wordpress.com (http://moderndinosaur.wordpress.com). For that project, digital is a necessary evil, so I do resort to the Canon SX130 IS, but film is my real love, so I try to feature it as much as possible.

Hi,

I have just joined the forum after meeting Paul Mitchell in Thatcham a couple of weeks ago. I have been doing film photography again for the last 2 or 3 years having last done it as a teenager, which was er... a while ago!

I went down the digital path for a couple of years, but now that kit generally sits idle while I use my 35mm or 120 film kit.  I have been following the Film Photography Podcast for a couple of years, and I see some of the same names on here too.

Looking forward to being part of the community.

Working out some kinks in the latest foamcore 8x10 pinhole. Light leaks... flaw or feature?? Anyway, I wasn't trying to look bored, but trying to assume a position I could hold for 96sec. I wasn't very successful. Imagine you've had one or two too many... this is what I look like.

I wonder what the collective noun for Leons is? A lorry-load of Leons?

I believe it's a litter of Leons.

I don't have many self-portraits but I've just come across this one which I took on Stac Pollaidh in the North-West of Scotland in June 1994; what struck me about the photo is that I still have the same red socks and wore them last week .. 18 years on and still in use.  They might have been a few years old when this was taken. The rucksack is still in use too although the weather on a trip to Glen Affric last week showed that it needed re-proofing. The beard is long gone, as is most of the hair hiding under the red hat.

2010... and when I think I've been coming here since it started years ago!

I think I better not think where time actually goes... I like to think that it is all relative.

Here's mine. It was an interesting exercise. I've shot a number on digital and its quite easy, a bit more involved on film I think. I've put details on my blog but an added problem of taking them with my Bronica is the lack of a delayed action setting. Amazing it wasn't until I came to do this that I even realised it didn't have one. Obviously not something I tend to use often.

I tried to do this as a portrait rather than a self portrait but entirely without outside assistance so here you are. Bit "rabbit in the headlights" I think.

This is me in an image taked by a Yashica Mat of a friend.

We met five or six friends, we all film amateurs, in an old and abandonned factory near Valencia —Spain—; spent a fantastic morning and wasted some rolls and 4x5 film sheets.

The Minolta Himatic 9 you can see is my only 35 mm. camera; I'm really satisfied with its Rokkor 1.7/45mm.

Hi everyone. My name is Mario, I've followed this forum for a while and I found this place so friendly that I'd like being part of it, even though I'm just a beginner on developing film (not printing yet). // Now living in Argentina (my country of birth) after almost twenty years of New York life. Working in a provincial theater in a coastal city 300 miles south of Buenos Aires and living in Sierra de los Padres, a small community in the countryside. Only a few toys: The corpse of a Minolta X700 (after its infamous capacitor died on me so many times that I gave up for good); a Olympus Trip 35 that I bought recently at a street market and became my companion; that behemoth of a camera known as Mamiya RZ67, which I’m still trying to tame; and humbly restoring a 1908 Watson & Sons 8 x 10 spanish mahogany and brass field camera, secretly hoping to use someday. No decent self-portrait as yet (except for the trite rearview mirror shot that I included nevertheless), so I promise to get one soon.

I stumbled onto this forum through a referral from my site. I made a tutorial on how to build a shutter for a pinhole camera with an old  computer floppy disc and someone here linked to it.
I just wanted to say hi and I'm looking forward to joining the discussion here, seems like a friendly place. I live in Hong Kong and I mainly shoot 35mm :)

Hello  film users.

I have been involved in photography since 1959, now retired I still enjoy creating images, and collecting cameras .

My collection isn't that large about 60 in total  from the very old like my Pony Premo and the  more modern like my Mimolta Maxxum, most of my collection gets used every now and then not just for display . I also have several home made cameras.

Self portrait take with a home made 120 pinhole cameras .

Thing is if it's 3 string and fully fretted you can tune it like a cigar box guitar and have something perfect for playing the blues that can be learned in an afternoon.

Welcome John. Handsome, the both of you.

Thanks Francois and Ezzie! I loved that camera. Sadly I didn't connect with it as I hoped I would. I sold it a few months ago and picked up a Pentax 67II, which fits my MF shooting style a little better. When I can rationalize having both systems, I will undoubtedly get the Mamiya 7 again.

I just got an M2 and a VC 35 2.5 in the mail yesterday, so my rangefinder cred is restored.

Hi All,

Here is a selfie I did for art school back in '98. I had recently migrated to Singapore (from Australia) and had a job in television. I was attempting to sum up who I was in one picture: International traveller, living in Asia, working in television... etc.

I started with photos of my passport, which I then projected onto my body. Then, using my online editing suite I composited this image with one I had taken of a lichen covered rock on my parent's country property. I keyed this image through the Chinese character jié 杰 which is part of my adopted Chinese name. Lastly, I photographed the television screen of the composite to get the raster effect.

Final image shot on Kodak E100SW with an RB67.

Ben.

That's pretty cool how some of the 'reflected' people are at the same scale as the 'inside' people. I had to stare at that one a while.

yeah! mind boggling depth to the shot :D

At a recent wedding that we got invited to. I  was the only one with a  film camera, everyone else kept telling  me I haven't seen one of those cameras in a long time. Everybody else had their iPads and iPhone that they were shooting with.

so you loaned out the camera for someone to take your shot then? and I guess this was with the m6? in that case, good work getting the person to come to terms with rangefinder focusing :)

Yeah I give it to the other couple on the other side of the table after I took their picture together. It was kind of hard pre-focusing it and setting the proper exposure since we are opposite side of the table and the sun was coming up from behind us. I feel I'm starting  to know my camera a little bit better now.

Lovely self portrait  :)

Hi, I'm Sean. I've been on this forum for a while, but I haven't been active on it lately. Here's a self portrait I shot with some friends at the Bean in Chicago a while back. Film is Lomography Orca 100 ISO 110, camera is a purple Vivitar 110. Scrape was caused by possibly a bad 110 cartridge? Not sure.

This is me, or was me, circa 1978.  On FP4, using an OM-1/50mm lens.  Home developed (developer not recorded).  I like to think of this as a selfie, but from the position of my arm I suspect my brother took it (using my camera!).

Hello you all! I too am new to this forum, registered a few months ago and think it was a good time to get started now :-)

I live in Sweden (Stockholm) and have shot film for some years and of course I have all to much gear, and will buy myself yet another system later today since I never learn my lesson ^_^

Mainly I prefer 6x6 in b&w.

Here is a picture of me, it may be like three years old or so, but I still look the same  ::)

Long time lurker, old Toy Camera forum member, just posted for the first time yesterday. This was shot with my SX-70 by a co-worker of mine at lunch at an Apfelweinwirtschaft in Frankfurt while on a business trip back in 2009. All my co-workers in Frankfurt were fascinated by the camera.

I used to shoot a lot when I was a kid, but got away from it when I hit my 20s. I returned to it after a 20 year break about ten years ago with my first DSLR, but I found that my shots were getting worse instead of better the more I shot. My turning point was on a trip to Florida when we visited the Kennedy Space Center. I brought my DSLR and a Diana that I had found in a thrift shop for a dollar (toy camera holy grail!). The battery on the DSLR was on its last legs and died after three photos. So I shot the entire day on my Diana. When I got the photos developed, it was like magic. I spent a few years shooting largely with toys (Diana, Holga, Clack, Fujipet, etc.), then moved on to ex-Soviet cameras (Kiev 88cm, Kiev II, Kiev 4am, Fed 5c). Lately, I've been shooting largely with a Rolleiflex MX-EVS that my wife insisted we buy after seeing the Vivian Maier documentary, and with a Calumet CC-401 4x5 camera, as well as a variety of Polaroid cameras (I particularly love my SX-70s and Land 250s). I've also dabbled in pinhole cameras, spent a year shooting only Kodachrome after its demise was foretold, and mucked around a little with digital toys like the Cyclops Camera Rihanna. My work was focused for many years on subverting nostalgia, but I don't do that any more; I've been casting around since that ended for another defining principle, and just messing around until I figure it out.

Yep. Mind you, I think Leon tends to use d*g*tal for podcast content.  That said, you'd probably struggle to find many FWers who don't use d*g*tal at least some of the time - even if it's only cameras on mobile phones.

Hello!

I just discovered this thread, I had searched for something similar to introduce myself but I missed it.
I already posted a couple of things in the "article" section, anyway, few words about me.

I'm a designer & illustrator, and I love photography. Mainly street as a genre, but I like experimenting with DIY projects and camera/lens gear.
I use analog, instant, and digital cameras, and sometimes I write short reviews.

Glad to be here.  I started out with a Kodak 126 Instamatic when I was around 8 back in 1962.  A year before that I had my picture taken by a nice gentleman at a farm sale, just down the road from where I grew up... it was a Polaroid.  He gave me the picture and I still have that B&W somewhere.

When I was in High School, a friend of mine sold me a camera he brought back from Viet Nam which was a Richo 126 Flex, a single lens reflex.  I shot a lot of pictures on it until it died.  Unusual square format, but was not bad for viewing either in slide or prints, mostly scrapbook and memory photos.

Over the years I've used a lot of different cameras, from Kodak EK-4, Zeiss Ikon (6x9), Mamiya C330, various speed and crown Graphics, a Graphic View II that I still have, Russian 6x6 slr, Pentax, Nikons, Rolliflex, Koni-Omea, and so on.

Right now I have 3 Bronica SQ-Ai camera bodies and 2 lenses, and 2 finders, so one is just a spare body.  Funny thing is I won an eBay auction for the one body at $27.00 and was interested in the viewing screen.  It looked nice, but the camera was listed as inoperative.  Well, it's far from inoperative and works better than the other 2 bodies.  There is not a thing wrong with the body in working, so that was a good deal.

I also have Polaroid 320 and 450 Pro pack film camera, and amazed as to what Fuji does with their peel apart films.  A Spectra and 2 Minolta Instant Pro cameras that use the newer Impossible Project films. Also 2 Fujifilm Instax wide cameras, a 500AF and a newer 300.  They do a remarkable job in instant for their colors and definitions.  Too bad Fuji is discontinuing their FP-100c film as it was truly a great instant film.  Nice that I could not worry about the length of time I needed before peeling, as LONG as it was more than 2 minutes.

Anyway, this is me.  Winemaker, photographer, and interested in a lot of other things, but for here, it is photography.

Sisters   Daughters Amanda and Samantha.  Shot with a Graphic View II with 210mm Schneider Symmar-S lens on Polaroid 55 PN instant film.

Welcome!

I agree with every single think you say about the Fuji instant emulsions, both the peel-apart (I'm totally gutted that it's going away!) and the Instax. The colors always impress me.

Winemaker, eh? Eeenteresting ;) What kinds?

I work for Fenn Valley Vineyards, near Fennville, MI.  I've been there since 1999 in the capacity of Assoc. Winemaker.  We make a lot of different wines, from Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Meritage (blend of Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet franc)  as well as Moscato, Cranberry, Spiced Peach and Honey and even Vidal Icewine.  We have a range from pretty much bone dry to very sweet like the Icewine or Late Harvest Vignoles.  Now we have recently started making ciders for us and for other winery/cider orders.  We have wine by the glass, by the bottle, or bulk. Same with the cider, and it is on tap.  I bring home a small bottle every couple of days to enjoy.  My special blend of our dry cider, with additional Apple Concentrate (gives it more apple flavor/character) and a touch of sugar to offset the crisp malic acid taste.

I actually started making wine in High School in my bedroom back in 1971.  Easy enough to make, and I did not need any ID for buying grape juice and yeast.  Mom already had some sugar.

Well, somehow editing removed the "quote" html coding.. oh well...

Welcome Aksarben, I also started on an Instamatic, I still have it and it still works.  I wonder how many of us started out on one?  I also drink wine.

I got the Instamatic 126 when Mom won a contest at the local town for 100.00 in town merchandise and she got me the camera for not much money in those times.  All the time growing up she took pictures of me with her Kodak Hawkeye Brownie, that took 620 film and sent it off to Scruttland Photo in Wisconsin or Illinois for developing and printing.  They sent here a fresh roll of film back along with prints and negatives.  Funny how those cameras, Instamatic and Hawkeye were single focal lenses (as in NO focus control)simple single speed shutters, no aperture control,  and we still took lasting memories with them.

Cider is pretty tasty alright.  Bring some home every now and then.  I cannot drink too much wine/cider/beer, not even a full bottle of beer without issues now.  Medicines I take for high blood pressure and some type 2 diabetes causes a real nasty headache about 2-3 hours after a single beer.  So, I drink small portions. :)

Thanks all for the comment on the Sisters picture.  It almost turned out a mistake as I overexposed the picture by not stopping down when I took the picture.  The resulting positive was mostly white. But, the negative was very dark and I used a film scanner I have to load it into the computer and changed the levels on it.  Kind of like you would do with more light in the enlarger, with a very dark dense negative.  Didn't turn out so bad.

I have posted just a few things on Flickr.  On en.wikipedia I posted a picture I took with my Nikon F3 of a very rare flower in the Sandhills of Nebraska.  Only place it is found is in 2 areas of the world.  Just a few blowouts in Nebraska Sandhills and a few blowouts in Wyoming.  That's it.  It is on the Endangered species act.  Blowout Bluebell.  Here is a link on on photo.net:  http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18184068&size=md (http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18184068&size=md)    And this link is to one of my domains that has the picture of it and some other Nebraska scenery as well:  http://www.taurus45acp.com/gallery/index2.htm (http://www.taurus45acp.com/gallery/index2.htm)

And special THANKS to Ed Wenn  that managed to get me able to log back in here after I changed my email address.  Kudos to him!!

Hello everybody,

I have been following the forum for some time (a couple of years or so...) gathering info here and there  :) and finally I decided to end up with my spying attitude  ;) and say hi and thank everyone here for the help. Thank you.

I started with film cameras when film cameras were the only way to get photos  8) so I am that old... My very first one was an ALPA from my granddad which I used extensively for years. Then, I do not know why, I decided to buy my own camera with my birthday savings and I bought a Yashica FX-3 2000, a fantastic camera still here with me that I was not able to obtain good results with. When digital world surfaced i promptly got a Digital Konica Minolta but results were't good. Some years later, I bought a Pentax Km (stolen) then replaced by a K20 to which I attached lots of manual lenses. This is my digital camera up to date.

It was in 2011 when I turned back to film, slowly but firmly  :) and now I can say that I am a real filmwaster (just look at my fridge where there are much more rolls than food  8) )

So here I am.

My photo, a bit blurred, taken with CineStill 50 and scanned with a Pakon F135 Plus,

A very grainy picture of me snowboarding last week taken by a friend using my camera.  Olympus Infinity Stylus Zoom DLX.  The film is Kodak Gold 200 that expired 03/2004.  It was developed in Beerenol (Rainier Beer) as black and white which gave it the grain.

Sorry, no self portrait as of yet, but I'd still like to introduce myself. :)

I'm friends with ManuelL and I used to shoot film decades ago as a teenager and later went into digital photography (which I still do). ManuelL and I have been friends for some time and during our photography outings I started to appreciate the charm of analogue photography again (it was me watching over him doing his craft with his 4x5 camera when he stood in this creek that's sometimes flooded with water from a dam -- what a thrill-seeker ;) ). So I finally went back to analogue photography last year with a Canon A-1 and AE-1 Program. I also have a weakness for small rangefinder cameras. I love my Olympus 35RC but also my Yashica Electro 35 GSN. I occasionally like taking photos with an old Zeiss Ikon Tenax which takes 24x24mm pictures. I've only been shooting 35mm film so far. I shoot colour and B&W,  however, I only develop B&W by myself.

ManuelL introduced me to this forum and I'm looking forward to discussing filmwasting with you guys. :)

Hello,

My name is Miguel. I'd like to consider myself a somewhat serious amateur... Currently own a Canon EOS 650, a Canon EF 35-70 lens that came with it and two filters. I've recently started developing, and also own an Epson V370 to scan my film. I'm in the process of setting a "pop-up" darkroom in my own bedroom.

Sorry, no self-portrait as of now.

Thank you!

I shot this in the course of attending a caffenol workshop in Las Vegas, NM conducted very ably by Becky Ramotowsky. I set my Argoflex Forty on a newpaper box in front of the drugstore and tripped the shutter with a cable release held at arm's lenth. I probably should have given the Acros twice the eight minutes I allowed it in the caffenol developer. Still, I was pretty pleased with the first-time results.

Greetings from an occasional lurker, now dipping a toe in a little further… With belated thanks to fixer Ed for resolving problems with my registration.

I came across the filmwasters site a few years ago, having been been getting back into film again over the last two or three years -- thanks for the inspiration and encouragement, whether or not you knew you were providing it! I live in London, by the way.

Time and budgets are usually tight but I do enjoy taking photos and developing (mostly black-and-white) film at home. I resurrected my film cameras (and developing tanks etc) from storage, mostly still working OK and supplemented by a few finds at charity shops and online bargains. Scanning negs and tweaking scans on computer appeal less, but will have to do until I get an enlarger sorted out to make prints…

I was going to post a pic but can't get it to show up at the moment -- so bye for now!

And don't worry about the tweaking scans thing, I think we all hate it and just resort to using levels, curves and dusting tools... And for me, a lot of the time not even the dusting tools.

Hi! I'm Ryan. I was born and still live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm a test prep instructor, meaning I teach math and English grammar, mostly to 25-ish-year-olds. I play jazz saxophone and piano and take photographs in my spare time. I've lurked on this forum for awhile and have really enjoyed my time here so I thought I'd join up; I haven't found anything on the internet quite like this place. I learned to develop film at my local community college awhile ago when I found a medium format camera in our local internet classifieds (to this day, I have actually never developed 35mm film myself! Only 120.) I'm now a member at SF's Harvey Milk Photo Center, our community darkroom. I'm also getting more into large format and am very much looking forward to chatting with all of you about it.

Thanks! Sort of - it was a collaborative effort. There was an assignment for my lighting class where we had to try to replicate the lighting from a famous photograph (we were given several choices). Our group of three chose Irving Penn's portrait of Truman Capote (a Google image search will bring up the original photo); we set up my camera and the lights, and I was chosen to model, I think largely because I wear glasses.

I was reflecting the other day that I've been in and out of FW since 2013 but never introduced myself at the beginning, so I'm doing this now before it reaches 10 years!   :o

As a child of 1964 I recall my folks taking one or two films on holiday on the easy to insert 126 format, later a 110, and then a point and shoot camera taking 135 during my teens. I managed to "borrow" a friend's Pentax ME Super during my undergraduate degree, and though film was regarded as expensive, I used one of the mail-in companies that returned a free film for every roll you sent in. I bought my own first SLR (a second hand ME Super) in 1990, but didn't start shooting film with gusto until about 2009.

I re-learned the joy by shooting lots and regularly, mainly using cheap expired film, before the prices started to get a bit excessive. I've had a career of working in secure mental health services, and I think that's helped me value solitude and the process and rewards of visual creation. I'm now semi-retired and have a lot more time, film, and cameras, and I finally started developing film only this February. And I love it! And there's still so much more I want to explore: developing in E6 and C41, learning to use that MPP 5x4 camera I bought 10 years ago while it was going cheap, using the 2 pin-hole cameras I made back in January, shooting more of those rolls of film that expired in 1964 now I know better how to expose and develop them, learning how to scan film better, and using that enlarger I was gifted...it just goes on ???

Your collective wisdom, fun, and tolerance are wonderful to be a part of, so thank you!  :)

My image was made by Laura Peters, using the wet plate collodion process on tin at the Phoenix Festival, Llanfyllin in Wales in August 2018.

I think the purpose of this shot was to see if the AGAT's minimal focal distance was equal to the length of my arm, and at least at this aperture I think it is!

This is a frame off the first Fomo R100 reversal film I just put through my new to me Beaulieu R16. There is a fair amount of solarisation on many of the frames.

To sync the audio, you need a clapper board. Or a hand clap. Having the remote release in one hand left me only one had to clap, so it was a head slap for syncing :)

And solarization is never a bad thing in my book, especially when it's not just bland.

I am guessing it was either my insufficient agitation during bleaching, or insufficient re-exposure.

The first bleaching step before re-exposure was insufficient. What happens is that the first image creates a masking layer for the second one.
And since the image is quite enlarged, the Mackie line appears thicker.

Thanks for confirming that error.

No problem. And BTW it isn't an error it's a creative alteration 😉

I signed up a few weeks ago but didn't introduce myself yet. So…
Hi from France,
I started dabbling with film only a few years ago, but already fell in love with many ways to waste it:
- Expired film;
- Making my own Caffenol variant (rosemary-based, nicknamed "Romarinol");
- Panoramic on cropped/masked 24x36 in reloaded "panorama" disposables, toy cameras, and even some proper cameras with pano mode;
- The Xpan being absurdly expensive, I have a few projects to build Fauxpans with a 24x72 or 24x58 mask on 135 film.

This was shot on Fuji Superia 200 (exp. 2010.03) with a Ricoh 500 GX. This camera is a light leaks machine, I still have to replace its seals…

Bonjour Phil!
